Isolationism
  • America was said to be a land of opportunity
because no matter what life you had you could
    become something in America.
  • Andrew Carnegie was an immigrant who founded a
steel making industry in America and became rich.
  • America was a mixed society by 1914 because there
were people from all over the world living there.

3
  • America entered the First World War in 1917.
  • America didnt suffer badly in the war because no
fighting took place in America and it joined at a
    late date.
  • America gained from the war because large powers
like Britain and France owed them money and
America had taken over overseas markets from some
    countries including German chemical works.

4
  • Woodrow Wilsons 14 points were used to form the
    League of Nations.
  • Four reasons Americans didnt want to join the
    league were
  • They didnt want to get involved in Europes
    petty squabbles.
  • Didnt want to lose money.
  • Did not want American soldiers to lose their
    lives.
  • German immigrants didnt want to support it
because it upheld the Treaty of Versailles.

5
  • The Republicans won the 1920 presidential
    election.
  • Warren Harding was the leader of the Republicans
    at the time.
  • The idea of returning to normalcy was getting
back to the way America was before the war.
  • This meant that America did not join the League
of Nations and did not sign the Treaty of
    Versailles.

6
  • The government wanted to stop the sale of foreign
goods in America to boost American industries.
  • In 1922 congress passed the Fordney McCumber
    Tariff.
  • A Tariff is a tax.
  • The danger of putting a tariff on American
imports is that other countries would put taxes
    on American goods.

7
  • Three reasons Americans wanted to cut the number
    of immigrants was
  • Immigrants were taking all the jobs.
  • Immigrants were bringing new political ideas such
    as communism.
  • Some immigrants could not speak English.
  • The Red scare was a fear of communism after the
    Russian revolt of 1917.
  • Immigrants had to read a passage of English to
    pass the 1917 literacy test.

8
  • This meant less people from poorer countries
because they could not afford to learn English.
  • The Immigration Act of 1921 only allowed 357,000
people into America and up to 3 of the number of
that nationality already in America in 1910.
  • This meant more people were allowed in from
places like Britain because there were a lot of
    Brits living there already.

9
  • In 1924 the Immigration Quota Act changed again
reducing the limit to 2 of the population in
1890 and again in 1929 by reducing the limit to
    150,000.
  • Three problems for many new immigrants were
  • They lived in poor housing.
  • Many could only find low paid jobs.
  • Immigrants ghettos appeared with high crime and
    violence rates.
  • 61 eye witnesses identified Sacco and Vanzetti as
the killers. Also they were carrying loaded guns
with bullets matching the size of bullet found in
the victims. Also Vanzetti had a previous
    conviction for armed robbery.

10
  • Sacco and Vanzetti were seen elsewhere by 107
people. And the others could not agree on the
    crime committed.
  • Sacco and Vanzetti were executed in 1927.
  • In 1977 the verdict was declared unjust because
the judge was prejudiced against Sacco and
    Vanzettis political views.

11
  • 3 ways which America showed it was isolationist
    were
  • Placing the Fordney McCumber Tariff on foreign
    goods.
  • Reduced the number of immigrants over a small
    space of time.
  • Did not join the League of nations.
  • 5 reasons America became isolationist were
  • They didnt want to lose money.
  • They didnt want to be involved in petty European
    squabbles.
  • They wanted to return to normalcy.
  • Didnt want to lose soldiers.
  • Wanted to boost American economy.
