Shots ring out

• JFK shot in neck and head

• Bullet enters John Connally in back, travels
  through, then hits arm and thigh

• Witnesses hear three shots

• JFK rushed to nearby hospital

• He never regains consciousness

• JFK pronounced dead 30 minutes later

The Aftermath

• Lyndon Johnson sworn in to replace President John
  Fitzgerald Kennedy
• Johnson family believes this forever connects
  them to this horrible event

But who to blame?

• Overnight, J. Edgar Hoover concluded Lee Harvey
  Oswald was lone assassin
• Believe shots believed came from Texas School
  Book Depository Building

Speculation Begins

• People begin to call the bullet that hit Kennedy
  once and Connally three times the magic bullet
  because it seems impossible to have traveled the
  path it did.

• Not much more than 40 years ago
• Warren Commission was the 1st official government
  inquiry
• Since then, hundreds of books, films, and
  websites have sifted through the evidence

• Warren Commission believed to be full of holes
• Claimed in 1964 that there was no evidence of a
  conspiracy

• The House Select Committee on Assassinations
  found that JFK was probably assassinated as a
  result of a conspiracy.
• People begin to believe that there was a second
  gunman on the grassy knoll

The Questions Continue

• 1998 CBS News poll found only 10 of respondents
  felt Oswald acted alone
• 74 believe there was a cover-up
• Recent polls suggest Americans still feel the same

Bottom Line

• Idea that a lone nut could kill the most
  powerful man in the world is unsettling
• People like to believe that things happen for a
  reason its comforting to believe that large
  events have important causes

• We still dont understand why it happened
• We still dont know exactly what happened
• And we still mourn the death of John Fitzgerald
  Kennedy
