  • Morehouse College

2
School Mission
  • Guided by a commitment to excellence, Morehouse,
an historically black liberal arts college for
men, assumes a special responsibility for
teaching students about the history and culture
of black people. The college seeks to develop men
    with disciplined minds, emphasizing the
continuing search for truth as a liberating
    force.
  • Morehouse prepares its students for leadership
and service through instructional programs and
    extracurricular activities that
  • develop skills in oral and written
    communications, analytical and critical thinking
    and interpersonal relationships
  • foster an understanding and appreciation of the
elements and evolution of various cultures and
the nature of the physical universe
  • foster understanding and appreciation of the
specific knowledge and skills needed for the
pursuit of professional careers and/or graduate
    study and
  • cultivate the personal attributes of
    self-confidence, tolerance, morality, ethical
behavior, humility, a global perspective, and a
    commitment to a social justice.

History of School
  • In 1867, two years after the Civil War ended,
Augusta Institute was established in the basement
of Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga.
Founded in 1787, Springfield Baptist is the
oldest independent African American church in the
United States. The schools primary purpose was
to prepare black men for the ministry and
teaching. Today, Augusta Institute is Morehouse
College, located on a 66-acre campus near
historic West End in Atlanta. The College enjoys
an international reputation for producing leaders
who have influenced national and world history.
  • As Morehouse celebrates 137 years of challenge
and change, the College continues to deliver an
    exceptional educational experience that today
meets the intellectual, moral, and social needs
of students representing more than 40 states and
18 countries a unique institution dedicated, as
always, to producing outstanding men and
extraordinary leaders to serve humanity with a
    spiritual consciousness.

Admissions Requirements
  • Many factors are taken into consideration in the
selection of a freshman class, and each candidate
is viewed on an individual basis. The strength of
a student's secondary preparation is an excellent
measure of a student's readiness for college. Of
value also are personal qualities, such as
    maturity, intellectual awareness, and motivation
toward learning. In addition to school records
and personal attributes, aptitude and achievement
test scores can be helpful in predicting college
performance and are considered with other
credentials in the application for admission to
    Morehouse.
  • A student's secondary school preparation should
include four (4) units in English, (3) units in
Mathematics, two (2) units in Natural Sciences,
and two (2) units in Social Sciences. Two (2)
units of Foreign Language are also recommended to
be included in preparation for entering students.
Additional study should be pursued in academic
    subjects according to individual interests.
Students who present strong academic records with
a "B" or better average (85 or better on 100
point scale) and test scores of at least 1000 on
the SAT or 22 on the ACT have the best chance for
    admission to Morehouse.

Fraternities
  • Greek Letter Fraternities are extracurricular
organizations chartered by the College. The
College encourages fraternities to contribute to
the fulfillment of its mission by promoting
    academic excellence, exercising collegial spirit,
    celebrating pluralism, recognizing the
    interdependence of campus organizations, and
respecting the dignity of the entire College
community. The College does not recognize
fraternities as secret societies because secrecy
is incompatible with the College's mission to
maintain an open exchange of ideas and
    information.
  • To be classified as a fraternity and operate on
    campus, organizations must be nationally
affiliated and adhere to various rules and
    regulations established by the College.
Compliance with College policies, procedures and
regulations always supersedes any oaths of
secrecy fraternity members may take. The College
