History
  • Started as UNDP Dept. of Electronics,Govt. of
    India funded project in 1986 to develop
  • National capabilities in the field of Computer
    Networking
  • To run multi-protocol network supporting OSI
    TCP/IP
  • To do R D in networking
  • All IITs, IISc Bangalore NCST Mumbai were
    partners in the project
  • Started with dial-up connectivity between all
    partners
  • Initially, UUCP mail was service
  • .in DNS at NCST Mumbai
  • Migrated to 9.6 kbps leased lines in 1990
  • Got 64 kbps international gateway to UUNet in
    1991
  • Brought Internet in India

  • Govt. of India converted this project into an
    autonomous organisation in 1998 with funding for
    4 years
  • Today ERNET India is self-sustaining
