MY INVOLVEMENT1.JOINT RESEARCH 2.WORKSHOPS .
I. Topics of my Joint Research
  • MECHANISM OF PHOTOCHROMISM IN A SERIES OF
COMPOUNDS SYNTHESIZED BY DR. M. FOUDA, NRC CAIRO
  • 2. STUDY OF SURFACE PROPERTIES OF
    SEMICONDUCTOR NANOSTRUCTURES USING A SENSITIVE
RAMAN SPECTROMETER BUILT BY PROF. H. TALAAT, EIN
    SHAMS U., CAIRO

18
MY EXPERIENCE WITH JOINT RESEARCH
  • EGYPT IS A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT AND EGYPTIANS ARE
    VERY FRIENDLY PEOPLE.
  • YOUNG EGYPTIAN PH.D. SCIENTISTS ARE SMART AND
    HARD WORKERS.
  • THEY FINISHED THEIR HALF BUT COMING TO FINISH THE
SECOND HALF OF THE PROGRAM HAS NOT STARTED DUE TO
    VISA PROBLEMS.

19
II. NSF WORKSHOPS (WITH DR. SAMY EL-SHALL,
VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH U.)
  • ADVANCED MATERIALS (NRC, CAIRO 2000)
  • LASER APPLICATIONS IN MATERIALS, INDUSTRY AND
    MEDICINE (NRC, CAIRO 2004)
  • NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS AND NANOTECHNOLOGY
ALEXANDRIA, WILL BE IN NOV. 2005

20
WORKSHOPS PREPARATIONS
  • DR. EL-SHALL AND I INVITED 15 ACTIVE APPROPRIATE
    U.S. RESEARCHERS
  • THE EGYPTIAN SIDE FORM AN APPROPRIATE
    ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE
  • WE HELD A MEETING IN EGYPT SIX MONTHS PRIOR TO
    THE MEETING
  • WE PUT A PROGRAM WITH BOTH EGYPTIAN AND US
    SPEAKERS FOR 5 DAYS

21
AT THE MEETING
  • SEVERAL HUNDRED EGYPTIAN SCIENTISTS CAME TO THE
    LECTURES
  • US SPEAKERS MET EGYPTIANS AT LONG BREAKS, LUNCHES
    AND CLOSING BANQUET
  • TOURS TO PYRAMIDS ABD MUSEUMS WERE ARRANGED
    DURING THE FIVE DAYS WORKSHOP
  • IN LAST HALF DAY, OPEN DISCUSSION SESSION IS HELD
    TO PRODUCE POSSIBLE JOINT PROPOSALS

22
SOME GOOD OUTCOMES FROM THE WORKSHOPS
  • FEW EGYPTIAN STUDENTS RECEIVED GRADUATE
    FELLOWSHIPS HERE
  • HP (DR. STAN WILLIAMS) OFFERED A POSTDOCTORAL
    FELLOWSHIP TO AN EGYTION PHYSICIST.
  • FEW JOINT PROPOSALS WERE SUBMITTED
  • US SCIENTISTS HAD EXCITING TIME (ONE US ACADEMY
MEMBER CAME TO BOTH WORKSHOPS WITH HIS WIFE),AND
    MADE GOOD FRIENDS.

23
SOME RECOMMENDATIONS
  • IN OUR EFFORTS TO CURTAIL TERRORISM AND TO
REGAIN THE US INFLUENCE IN THE REGION, MORE FUNDS
ARE NEEDED FOR MORE EXCHANGE COLLABORATIVE
RESEARCH BETWEEN US SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS OF
ALL AGES AND THOSE IN EGYPT AND THE OTHER ARAB
    COUNTRIS.
  • ESTABLISHMENT OF A US-ARAB RESEARCH FUND (FUNDS
COME FROM THE US AND THE ARAB OILRICH COUNTRIES)
FOR US-ARAB JOINT EXCHANGE RESEARCH PROJECTS
BETWEEN US SCIENTISTS ENGINEERS AND THOSE OF
    ANY ARAB COUNTRY.
  • SOLVE THE VISA PROBLEM WITHOUT JEOPARDIZING OUR
    OWN SECURITY.
