St. Petersburg Online Communicator (SPOC)
  • SPOC was developed by St. Petersburg College's
Web Instructional Technology department as a
suite of tools designed for synchronous and
    asynchronous communications in online classes.
SPOC users simply need a high speed internet
connection with a Flash enabled web browser to
    allow real-time collaborative learning from
    anywhere.

5
History of SPOC
  • Required to offer Speech online
  • Click to Meet original synchronous audio/video
tool - out of business 2003/2004
  • Flash Media Server developed and promoted by
    Macromedia
  • NTPI bought Flash Media server
  • In house development began after attendance at a
    Macromedia Conference in 2003
  • First SPOC tool development began in Jan 2005

6
SPOC Overview
  • Easy to use Only 1 plug-in required - Flash
  • Synchronous and asynchronous tools
  • Some tools require scheduling while some do not.
  • All are managed through SPOC Central
  • Often integrates with ANGEL learning management
    system

7
Hardware Requirements
  • DSL light connection or better (some tools
    require cable modem or higher)
  • Computer Windows 95 or higher
  • Camera USB eyeball camera
  • USB Headset and/or microphone

8
SPOC Central
  • SPOC central is a management and scheduling
website developed by the Web and Instructional
    Technology Services department of SPC.
  • All SPC employees use their network login
    information to access the tools
  • Holds tutorials for all tools
  • Allows collection of feedback from users

9
Asynchronous Tools
  • Faculty video recorder
  • Faculty audio recorder
  • Student video feedback dropbox tool - Kuzma video
    option for report
  • Student audio recorder - dropbox tool

10
Synchronous Tools
  • Web conferencing tool
  • Desktop presenter
  • Audio chat archived
  • Online Office hours

11
SPOC - Faculty Audio Recorder
  • Allows you to create short audio snippets and
easily place them in your course or website.

12
SPOC Faculty Video Recorder
  • Allows you to create short video snippets up to 4
minutes in length and easily place them in your
    course or website.

13
SPOC Student Video Feedback Dropbox tool
  • Allows the student to create a video recording
within the ANGEL drop box tool and submit the
video recording. The instructor provides feedback
within the student video submission. Students can
    review the instructor feedback.

14
SPOC Student Audio Recorder Dropbox Tool
  • Provides a method for students to record audio
files and submit them via a dropbox in ANGEL.
Instructors are able to listen to the file and
provide a grade and text comments that are
reviewable by the submitting student. NOTE - This
tool will generate HTML code that can only be
used within an ANGEL dropbox tool.

15
Web Conferencing Tool
  • Allows full audio, video, chat and website
interaction for up to 12 participants and an
instructor. Instructors can easily identify and
manage the participant connections to ensure high
quality connectivity. This is an excellent tool
for virtual presentations and meetings for groups
of 2 to 12 students. All participants need
webcams and headsets with microphones in order to
take full advantage of this tool functionality.

16
Desktop Presenter
  • The Desktop Presenter tool will allow the
presenter to share in real-time their computer
desktop to participants. The presenter can share
an application such as Excel to explain difficult
concepts or show a PowerPoint presentation.
Anything on the instructor's computer can be
    displayed to the participants.

17
Archived Audio Chat Tool
  • Allows one way audio from the instructor and two
way chat from an unlimited number of
participants. Sessions are recorded and can be
reviewed at a later date in their original form.

18
Online Office Hours
  • Users conduct office hours with individual
students in an online format. The administrator
of the office hours is able to text chat as well
as send video and audio to an individual
participant. The participants will know when the
administrator of the office hours is online or
away. The individuals line up in cue while the
person conducting the office hours is chatting to
another individual. The participants "waiting in
line" know how many people are ahead and behind
    them in line.

19
SPOCs Future
  • Enrollment management text only - queued list of
    waiting students
  • Updated web conferencing tool
  • Office hours tool - audio/video one way chat back
  • Upgrades to existing tools
