Title: Day Two:
1Day Two
2-1
2Day Two
2-2
3The Usual Suspects
The usual suspects in the movie Casablanca
were rounded up because they were not the folks
Louis felt comfortable with.
2-3
4Think for a minute about
- The people in your unit at home
- The people you work with
Are there people you count on all the time? When
it really needs to get done, do you turn to the
usual suspects to make it happen?
2-4
5The Usual Suspects
- Do they have the same work ethic as you do?
- Are you alike in many ways?
- Do you know them better than others?
What about the other folks? How are they
different?
2-5
6 At this point in the course youve probably
identified those folks who are like you in your
patrol and those who are not.Lets talk about
differences
2-6
7Diversity Any dimension that can be used to
differentiate groups and people from one another.
Its a word used a lot today, but making it a
part of how a leader thinks and works means
understanding another word . . .
2-7
8Inclusiveness
2-8
9What happens when a patrol makes diversity work?
- All skills and life experiences are put to work
to achieve success. - The experience is richer for all.
2-9
10But what happens if diversity isnt made to work
as a strength?
- People feel they experience negative treatment.
- Strong emotions build that get in the way.
We are not always talking about discrimination.
It can be as simple as always turning to the
usual suspects.
2-10
11Patrol People
- Successful patrols put differences to work.
- Successful patrols will function as a team.
- Members of a team are responsible for the whole
group.
How do you make diversity work in a
patrol? Include everyone on the team!
2-11
12What can I do?
- When you lead, make sure everyone has challenging
opportunities to contribute and learn. - Consider how your leadership style affects the
team environment. - Take time to show you care.
- Recognize individual and team achievements.
- Reach out and learn something from everyone.
2-12
13Food for Thought
- Does everyone understand and agree with what
success looks like for your patrol at Wood Badge? - Do you actively sense how team members are doing
and do something about it? - Are you teaching each other skills so all can
more fully participate? - Do team members support one another during times
of conflict? - Does the team work to ensure everyone is
performing at his or her best? - Do you celebrate individual success as a group?
- Does everyone feel like they are contributing
something to and getting something from the
patrol?
2-13

concepts. - Make them work and the team will grow!
