9More Demographics
- There is a 13 (207)increase in the number of
students enrolled under the age of 22 from 5
years ago - There is an 11 increase in the number of
students of color from five years ago (nearly 10
of our winter enrollment, 602 students)
10The Statistic that causes concern
- The largest growing area of the College is in our
Foundation Studies, pre-college level classes for
many of our 18-19 year old students. This
requires a huge investment in resources in an
already tight budget.
11ACHIEVING THE DREAM INITIATIVE
12Access to Success
- Community colleges enroll almost half of all U.S.
undergraduate students, and the American public
appreciates their commitment to providing broad
access. - But access alone isnt enough. Currently fewer
than half of community college students meet
their educational goals. - Achieving the Dream is working to help more
students earn certificates or degrees that open
the door to better jobs, further education, and
greater opportunity.
13ACHIEVING THE DREAM
- New Students Placing into
- Developmental Education
60 of all new students place into at least one
developmental course (reading, writing, and/or
math) Of these, 54 place into two developmental
education courses
Students entering in Fall 2005
14What does our DE student population look like ?
- Higher percentage of males, students of color and
traditional-age students (under 25) in reading
and writing - In math courses, we saw a higher percentage of
females, students of color and tradition-age
students.
15At the State level
- Supported by the Michigan Community College
Association which has three goals - Establish a statewide post-secondary data base
- Link to other state initiatives, specifically
