Why Edit?
  • To revise and make ready for publication
  • To catch spelling and grammatical errors
  • To ensure proper punctuation is used
  • To delete extra words and add forgotten words
  • To make sure complete sentences are used, not
    fragments or run-ons
  • To add paragraph indentation as necessary
  • To ensure organization of thoughts and clarity of
    meaning

4
How to Edit
  • Best Advice
  • After writing an article, set it aside for a
time. Do something else. Change your train of
thought Overnight is best, if possible.
  • When you return to your work, your eyes will be
fresh and you will see the mistakes that you
glazed over before. (Sometimes our brains fill in
the holes and see it the way we meant it to be
instead of the way it is!)
  • Someone elses eyes are even better! They can
read the sentence that makes perfect sense to you
and say, WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN? Then you
know you need to fix it!

5
Editing
  • Prepare yourself for the editing process.
  • CHANGE IS INVOLVED!
  • You may love what you have written, but dont
come to the table thinking it is perfect.
  • The object is to take a good piece of writing,
    and make it even better.
  • Hone it, craft it and improve it!
  • Editing does not mean you are stupid and did it
wrong the first time. Everyone (even professional
    writers) must edit their work!

6
Spell check does my Editing
  • Spell check and grammar check may HELP, and may
provide an initial round of editing for you BUT
    THEY DO NOT CATCH EVERYTHING!!
  • A computer is, after all, a machine and has not
mastered all of the nuances of the English
    language.
  • Ever hear of a homophone? The computer does not
    know which one is correct.

7
For example
  • Read the following sentence and tell me if it is
    correct.
  • The last time I went too the store I bought to
candy bars and then ate two much.
  • Spell-check says everything is A-OK.
  • The last time I went to the store I bought two
candy bars and then ate too much.
