1
KINS 382 - Lab 2
  • Linear Velocity

2
Velocity
  • Velocity is a unit that measures rate of movement
    and direction of the movement.
  • Velocity is a derived quantity. The quantity is
    derived from time and displacement.
  • The standard measurement of velocity (V) is
    meters/second.
  • V can also be measured in mi/hr, ft/sec, etc..

3
Time
  • Time is a fundamental quantity.
  • Time is measured in seconds.

4
Distance
  • Distance is a fundamental quantity.
  • Distance is measured in a number of units
including meters, feet, miles, and inches.
  • The standard and internationally accepted unit of
    measurement for distance is meters.
  • Displacement is used in the formula for Velocity
and distance is used for speed

5
The Equation for Velocity
  • Velocity displacement/time
  • There are instances that you will need to find
displacement or time and you will be given
    velocity.
  • Time displacement/velocity
  • Displacement (velocity)(time)

6
How to Manipulate the Equation for Velocity
  • From V d/t, To t d/V
  • (Step1) t (x) V d/t (x) t
  • (Step2) (t)(V) d
  • (Step3) (t)(V)/V d/V
  • (Step4) t d/V
  • Steps 2 and 4 are the equations for distance
    and time respectfully.

7
Question 1
  • Derek Jeter runs from first to second with an
average velocity of 21.75mi/hr. He runs a
distance of 80ft. (He had a 10ft lead off and the
bases are 90ft apart). How many seconds does this
    take him.

8
Answer 1
  • V 21.75mi/hr d 80ft. t ?
  • The equation we need is t d/v
  • (Step1) Convert V to ft/s thus V 21.75mi/hr X
    1.47ft/s./1mi/hr. 31.97ft/s.
  • (Step2) t 80ft./31.97ft/s. 2.50s

9
Question 2
  • A study was done to determine if a baseball
player who bats left handed has an advantage in
    reaching first base.
  • The average distance to run from the left handed
batters side was 88.71ft and V 21.20ft/s. The
average distance to run from the right handed
    batters side was 92.32ft and V 21.27ft/s
  • How long does it take to reach first base batting
left handed? How long for a right handed batter?
(The answer needs to be given in seconds.)

10
Answer 2
  • Lefty d 88.71ft., V 21.20ft./s., t ?
  • (Step1) t 88.71ft./21.20ft./s. 4.18s
  • Righty d 92.32ft., V 21.27ft./s., t ?
  • (Step1) t 92.32ft./21.27ft./s 4.34s

11
Question 3
  • Runner A completes 1500m at an average speed of
    7.30m/s.
  • Runner B completes 1500m with a time of 3.38min.
  • Calculate the time for runner A and the speed for
    runner B in m/s and mi/hr.

12
Answer 3
  • Runner A V 7.30m/s., d 1500m, t ?
  • (Step1) t 1500m/7.30m/s 205.48s
  • (Step2) t 205.48s X 1min./60s. 3.42min. Or
    325sec (.42min X 60sec/1min 25sec)
  • Runner B d 1500m., t 3.38min., V ?
  • (Step1) 3.38min. X 60s./1min. 202.8s
  • (Step2) V 1500m/202.8s 7.40m/s
  • (Step3) 7.40m/s X 1mi./hr./.447m/s 16.55mi/hr.

13
Question 4
  • A basketball coachs favorite drill is known as a
suicide. A good time is between 25-30sec.
Knowing that a basketball court is 90 feet in
length, calculate the average speed needed to
finish the drill in the time frame given.
  • The total distance covered by the runner is 450ft.

14
Answer 4
  • Time (1) 30sec. d 450ft.
  • (Step1) V d/t V 450ft./30sec. 15ft/sec
  • (Step2) 15ft./s. X .304m./1ft. 4.56m/s
  • Time (2) 25sec. d 450ft.
  • (Step1) V d/t V 450ft./25sec. 18ft/sec
  • (Step2) 18ft./s. X .304m./1ft. 5.47m/s

15
Question 5
  • Ben Johnson ran a wind aided 100m in 9.79sec.
What was his velocity? If his velocity was to
reach 10.63m/s what would his time be?

16
Answer 5
  • Part1 d 100m, t 9.79s, V ?
  • (Step1) V 100m/9.79s 10.21m/s
  • Part2 V 10.63m/s, d 100m, t ?
  • (Step1) t 100m/10.63m/s 9.41s

17
Question 6
  • Dr. Stull ran for 25minutes at a speed of
4.2mi./hr. What is his distance in miles and in
    meters?

18
Answer 6
  • d (t)(v)
  • t 25min. V 4.2mi./hr.
  • (Step1) Convert min. to sec., 25min X 60sec
    1500s
  • (Step2) Convert mi/hr to m/s, 4.2mi./hr. X
    .447m./s./1mi./hr. 1.88m/s
  • (Step3) d (1500s)(1.88m/s) 2820m
  • (Step4) 2820m X 1mi/1609.35m 1.75miles

19
Question 7
  • The winner of the Clam Beach Run finished in
8.75miles with an average speed of 5.10m/s. What
was his time in minutes and seconds?

20
Answer 7
  • V 5.10m/s d 8.75miles t ?
  • (Step1) Convert miles to meters. 8.75mi. X
    1609.35m/1mi. 14,081.81 meters
  • (Step2) 14,081m/5.10m/s 2761.14s
  • (Step3) 2761.14s X 1min/60s 46.02 min
