WIPP Waste Comparisons
35
  • The total amount of methane in the headspace gas
of waste containers underground is equivalent to
a cow burping for over a six-hour period or 35
    two-liter soda bottles of methane.
  • Rubber waste now underground is equal to 3,890
    17-inch tires--enough for 972 cars.

3,890
7
WIPP Waste Comparisons (continued)
  • WIPP has disposed 5,188 tons of iron-based and
other metals, equal to a ten-acre lot of
    passenger cars parked side-by-side,
    bumper-to-bumper.
  • If all cellulosics (such as wood-based products)
now disposed were converted to lumber, would be
enough to build 40 single family homes of 2,450
    square feet.

Ten acres of cars parkedside-by-side and
bumper-to-bumper
Lumber for forty 2,450 ft2 homes
8
WIPP Waste Comparisons (continued)
  • If all plastic materials now in WIPP were molded
into hard hats, would equal 51 hard hats per
resident.  For family of four, that's 204 hard
    hats.
  •
  • The total silver in disposed homogeneous wastes
is only enough for 11 one-ounce coins.

51 per Carlsbad resident
11 silver coins
