- Road bicycle racing is a popular racing sport
held on roads using racing bicycles. - The historic race Giro d'Italia is the most
prestigious for a cyclist to win.

demanding sports. - It is practiced especially during the spring
and summer season.

3The equipment
- The most important things about a racing
bicycle are - light weight
- aerodynamics
- ergonomics of the rider's position
- Race bike components are referred to as the
group set and are usually in carbon fiber,
because in this way the racing bicycle is
lighter.

4The wheel rim is usually in aluminium alloy to
reduce both air resistance and rolling resistance
on the road.
- The equipment requires also a helmet and a
particular pair of trainers. - The price of a new bicycle can range from 2000
to more than 9000 depending on quality, type
and weight.

5Teams
- Many of the riders are grouped together in
teams, usually with commercial sponsors. - Team riders decide between themselves,
before and during a race, which of them has the
best chance of winning. The team will devote
itself to promoting its leader's chances.

RUJANO
- The riders of the main specialities in road
bicycle racing are - Climber - a lot of endurance and specifically
developed muscles for long hard climbs. - Time trialist - a road bicycle racer who can
maintain high speeds for long periods of time.
KLODEN
7- Sprinter - a road bicycle racer who can finish a
race very explosively by accelerating quickly to
a high speed. - Domestique - a road bicycle racer who works for
the benefit of his team and leader. - All-rounder - excelling in both climbing and time
trialing, and may also be a sprinter - usually
Team Leaders.

8Marco Pantani
- The best climber of all time
9his life
Marco Pantani was an Italian road racing
cyclist widely regarded as being one of the best
climbers. The zenith of his career was winning
both the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia in
1998. However, his career was beset by drug
abuse allegations, following his failure of a
blood test in the 1999 Giro d'Italia.
10his achievements
- In 1994, during his second participation to the
Giro d'Italia, he became known after winning two
mountain stages and finishing 2nd. - Pantani made his Tour de France debut in 1994
finishing 3rd overall. - He also finished third in 1995 World Cycling
Championship in Colombia. -
- During the early years of Pantani's career He
impressed other cyclists so much during the
ascent of l'Alpe d' Huez in the 1994 Tour de
France.
- The following year, 1998, was the year of
glory for Pantani. He won 3 international
criterium races. For the first time he won the
Giro d'Italia with another big success he won
the Tour de France with two mountain stages. - In 2000 he won two stages in Tour de France

- During the early evening of 14th February 2004
Pantani was found dead at a hotel in Rimini,
Italy. An autopsy revealed he died by acute
cocaine poisoning. - Miguel Indurain,paid a tribute by saying "He got
people hooked on the sport.There may be riders
who have achieved more than him, but they never
succeeded in drawing in the fans like he did." - Giro d'Italia's organizers decided to dedicate a
mountain pass to Pantani's memory every year. - The 16th stage of 2004 Tour de France was
dedicated by the organization to Pantani's
memory.

13What is it?
- The Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy), also simply
known as The Giro, is a long distance road
bicycle racing stage race for professional
cyclists held over three weeks in May/early June
in and around Italy. - It is one of the three Grand Tours,with Le Tour
de France and Vuelta a Espana.
14Every year, hundreds of thousands of supporters
invade the roads followed by the Giro and
almost 43 million Italians enjoy watchingthe
race on TV.
15- The Giro has become a true "town on the road",
involving a staff of ca. 2000 operative persons,
with at least 1000 vehicles representing each and
every media (press, TV, photo reporters) sport
teams, technical assistance. They precede the
racing cyclists by one hour.
16The Giro d' Italia 's goal was to boost the sales
of the sports newspaper
- The leader of the general ranking in the Giro
d'Italia wears a pink jersey (maglia rosa)
because the pages of La Gazzetta dello Sport are
pink.

- This is the symbol of the leader of the final
overall ranking. - It was created in 1931 the first racer that wore
it was Learco Guerra, and the first one that won
it was Francesco Camusso.

a new pink jersey. They have respected tradition,
the space for sponsors and also some technical

year, except for the two periods of World Wars - from 1915 till 1918
- from 1940 till 1945
24- After easily winning the Giro for four
consecutive years (from 1926 to 1929) Alfredo
Binda was kindly asked to remain home because of
his evident superiority. - In 1930 he got - for not participating - the
prize he would have won in case of victory, that
is 22.500 Lire, the equivalent of 100.000 .

- d' Italia counted also a queen,
- Alfonsine Strada. She created a scandal when she
announced that she would compete with men at the
Giro.

1914 - In the same year only 8 riders finished the Giro
- A Jury that will be remembed inflicted fines for

riders cycled at a snail pace as a protest and
the jury confiscated the prize for insufficient
competitive spirit

29The 2009 Giro dItalia is really important
because it is the hundredth edition of the
competition.
Everybody all over Europe knows what the Giro
dItalia is, and also the famous sportsmen who
have taken part in the previous editions.
30This competition will be followed by thousands of
fans.
31- The tour will start from
Venice, touch Austria, Switzerland
and France and finish in Rome. It is the first
time that the Giro dItalia finishes outside
Milan, but there will be a city circuit during
the competitions to honour the city.
32- The race director Angelo Zomegnan said
- To create this Giro we used our hearts and
passion, we hope this is the continuation of
another 100 years.
33And it is just show and battle that all the fans
expect from this hundredth edition of the Tour of
Italy
