Title: Road bicycle racing

1
Road bicycle racing
  • Road bicycle racing is a popular racing sport
held on roads using racing bicycles.
  • The historic race Giro d'Italia is the most
prestigious for a cyclist to win.

1
2
  • Cycling is one of the most physically
    demanding sports.
  • It is practiced especially during the spring
    and summer season.

2
3
The equipment
  • The most important things about a racing
    bicycle are
  • light weight
  • aerodynamics
  • ergonomics of the rider's position
  • Race bike components are referred to as the
group set and are usually in carbon fiber,
because in this way the racing bicycle is
    lighter.

3
4
The wheel rim is usually in aluminium alloy to
reduce both air resistance and rolling resistance
on the road.
  • The equipment requires also a helmet and a
    particular pair of trainers.
  • The price of a new bicycle can range from 2000
to more than 9000 depending on quality, type
    and weight.

4
5
Teams
  • Many of the riders are grouped together in
    teams, usually with commercial sponsors.
  • Team riders decide between themselves,
before and during a race, which of them has the
best chance of winning. The team will devote
itself to promoting its leader's chances.

glory for Pantani. He won 3 international
criterium races. For the first time he won the

    cocaine poisoning.
  • Miguel Indurain, paid a tribute by saying "He got
people hooked on the sport. There may be riders
who have achieved more than him, but they never
succeeded in drawing in the fans like he did."
  • Giro d'Italia's organizers decided to dedicate a
mountain pass to Pantani's memory every year.
  • The 16th stage of 2004 Tour de France was
dedicated by the organization to Pantani's
    memory.

GIRO DITALIA
  • 100 YEARS OF PASSION

13
What is it?
  • The Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy), also simply
known as The Giro, is a long distance road
bicycle racing stage race for professional
cyclists held over three weeks in May/early June
    in and around Italy.
  • It is one of the three Grand Tours, with Le Tour
de France and Vuelta a Espana.

14
Every year, hundreds of thousands of supporters
invade the roads followed by the Giro and
almost 43 million Italians enjoy watchingthe
race on TV.
15
  • The Giro has become a true "town on the road",
involving a staff of ca. 2000 operative persons,
with at least 1000 vehicles representing each and
every media (press, TV, photo reporters) sport
teams, technical assistance. They precede the
    racing cyclists by one hour.

16
The Giro d' Italia 's goal was to boost the sales
of the sports newspaper
  • The leader of the general ranking in the Giro
d'Italia wears a pink jersey (maglia rosa)
because the pages of La Gazzetta dello Sport are
    pink.

17
The pink jersey
  • This is the symbol of the leader of the final
    overall ranking.
  • It was created in 1931 the first racer that wore
it was Learco Guerra, and the first one that won
    it was Francesco Camusso.

19
The 2009 pink jersey
  • This year the famous DG pride decided to design
a new pink jersey. They have respected tradition,
the space for sponsors and also some technical
    considerations.
  • There is one original touch on the neckline
  • the Italian tricolour flag.

  • from 1940 till 1945

24
  • After easily winning the Giro for four
consecutive years (from 1926 to 1929) Alfredo
Binda was kindly asked to remain home because of
    his evident superiority.
  • In 1930 he got - for not participating - the
prize he would have won in case of victory, that
is 22.500 Lire, the equivalent of 100.000 .

25
  • In I972 the Giro

announced that she would compete with men at the
    Giro.

Trivia
  • The longest stage was 430 km long (267,19 mi.) in
    1914
  • In the same year only 8 riders finished the Giro
  • A Jury that will be remembed inflicted fines for
about 50 million euros only in one stage.
  • In the 1954 edition in a hard steep street the

the jury confiscated the prize for insufficient
    competitive spirit
