2
Levines Conservation model
  • Conservation preserving individual wholeness
  • Address the integrity of the individual from
    birth to death.
  • Every activity must respect the structural
    wholeness of the individual
  • The rules of conservation and integrity are
applicable to all aspects of nursing
  • A way to remember conservation aims to maintain
    an equilibrium conducive to health

Levines model and the Nursing Practice
How does Leiningers Theory of Nursing Inform
nursing practice?
  • 1 In Conservation of Energy Levine reminds us
that Nurses are the front line of contact for
individuals who are healing or aging and are
    challenged to conserve their energy.
  • 2 In Conservation of Structural Integrity we
see that we will be providing support to the
structure of our patients by practicing range of
motion and careful positioning of our clients.
  • 3 In Conservation of Personal Integrity we
realize the importance of respecting patient
privacy and valuing patients personal choice.
  • 4 In Conservation of Social Integrity Levine
points out our responsibility in providing family
support as well as patient education and
    interaction with others.

Levines model and the Nursing practice (cont)
  • "Ethical behaviour is not the display of one's
moral rectitude in times of crisis," says nurse
Myra Levine, "It is the day-to-day expression of
one's commitment to other persons and the ways in
which human beings relate to one another in their
    daily interactions.
  • - Levine, Myra. (1977).

5
Leiningers Theory of Culture Care Diversity and
Universality
  • Culture is important to the nurse because it
    shapes every person.
  • Nurses should see their patients in context of
    their culture.
  • The outcome of culturally congruent nursing care
is a greater level of wellness for the patient.
  • How to remember this theory cultures are unique,
    but they also have similarities

Leiningers Model and the Nursing Practice
How does Leiningers Theory of Nursing Inform
nursing practice?
  • Due to the growing diversity of the United
    States, Leiningers theory has become
    increasingly relevant.
  • Caring is the essence of nursing, and nurses must
develop cultural competence to provide quality
care to patients of different cultures.
  • The nurse must recognize and respect the health
beliefs of the patients culture when planning
    nursing care.
  • For example, when caring for a Saudi Arabian
Patient, the nurse should never give pills and
medications with the left hand, as the culture
regards the left hand as "unclean."
