Title: Are You Ready to Die

1
Are You Ready to Die?
  • Are You Willing To Live?

2
Mark 1017-1124 NASU
3
Mark 1017-21
  • As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up
to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good
Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal
life?" 18 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call
Me good? No one is good except God alone.
  • 19 "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT MURDER, DO
NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR
FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER
AND MOTHER.'" 20 And he said to Him, "Teacher, I
have kept all these things from my youth up."

4
  • 21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and
said to him, "One thing you lack go and sell all
you possess and give to the poor, and you will
have treasure in heaven and come, follow Me.
  • But at these words he was saddened, and he went
away grieving, for he was one who owned much
    property.
  • And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples,
" How hard it will be for those who are wealthy
to enter the kingdom of God!" The disciples were
    amazed at His words.

5
Mark 1022-27
  • But Jesus answered again and said to them,
"Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of
God! " It is easier for a camel to go through
the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter
    the kingdom of God."
  • They were even more astonished and said to Him, "
Then who can be saved?" Looking at them, Jesus
said, " With people it is impossible, but not
with God for all things are possible with God."

6
Mark 1028-31
  • Peter began to say to Him, "Behold, we have left
    everything and followed You."
  • Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, there is no one
who has left house or brothers or sisters or
mother or father or children or farms, for My
sake and for the gospel's sake, but that he will
receive a hundred times as much now in the
present age, houses and brothers and sisters and
mothers and children and farms, along with
persecutions and in the age to come, eternal
life. "But many who are first will be last, and
    the last, first."

7
Mark 1032-34
  • They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and
Jesus was walking on ahead of them and they were
amazed, and those who followed were fearful.
  • And again He took the twelve aside and began to
tell them what was going to happen to Him,
saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief
priests and the scribes and they will condemn
Him to death and will hand Him over to the
Gentiles. "They will mock Him and spit on Him,
and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days
    later He will rise again."

8
Mark 1035-40
  • James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up
to Jesus, saying, "Teacher, we want You to do for
us whatever we ask of You." And He said to them,
"What do you want Me to do for you?"

9
  • They said to Him, " Grant that we may sit, one on
Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory."
But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you
are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I
drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with
    which I am baptized?
  • They said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said
to them, "The cup that I drink you shall drink
and you shall be baptized with the baptism with
which I am baptized. "But to sit on My right or
on My left, this is not Mine to give but it is
for those for whom it has been prepared."

10
Mark 1041-45
  • Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant
    with James and John.
  • Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, "You
know that those who are recognized as rulers of
the Gentiles lord it over them and their great
    men exercise authority over them.
  • "But it is not this way among you, but whoever
wishes to become great among you shall be your
servant and whoever wishes to be first among
you shall be slave of all. "For even the Son of
Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and
to give His life a ransom for many."

11
Mark 1046-52
  • Then they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving
Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a
blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of
Timaeus, was sitting by the road. When he heard
that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry
out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on
    me!"
  • Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he
kept crying out all the more, " Son of David,
have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped and said,
    "Call him here."

12
  • So they called the blind man, saying to him, "
Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you."
Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up and came
to Jesus. And answering him, Jesus said, "What do
you want Me to do for you?"
  • And the blind man said to Him, " Rabboni, I want
to regain my sight!" And Jesus said to him, "Go
your faith has made you well." Immediately he
regained his sight and began following Him on the
    road

13
Mark 111-4
  • As they approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and
Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He sent two of
His disciples, and said to them, "Go into the
village opposite you, and immediately as you
enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on
which no one yet has ever sat untie it and bring
    it here.
  • "If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?'
you say, 'The Lord has need of it' and
immediately he will send it back here."
  • They went away and found a colt tied at the door,
outside in the street and they untied it.

14
  • Some of the bystanders were saying to them, "What
are you doing, untying the colt?" They spoke to
them just as Jesus had told them, and they gave
them permission. They brought the colt to Jesus
and put their coats on it and He sat on it. And
many spread their coats in the road, and others
spread leafy branches which they had cut from the
fields. Those who went in front and those who
    followed were shouting
  • "Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF
THE LORD Blessed is the coming kingdom of our
father David Hosanna in the highest!"

15
Mark 1111-14
  • Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple
and after looking around at everything, He left
for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already
    late.
  • On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He
became hungry. Seeing at a distance a fig tree in
leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find
anything on it and when He came to it, He found
nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for
figs. He said to it, "May no one ever eat fruit
from you again!" And His disciples were
    listening.

16
Mark 1115-16
  • Then they came to Jerusalem. And He entered the
temple and began to drive out those who were
buying and selling in the temple, and overturned
the tables of the money changers and the seats of
those who were selling doves and He would not
permit anyone to carry merchandise through the
    temple.

17
Mark 1117-19
  • And He began to teach and say to them, "Is it not
written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF
PRAYER FOR ALL THE NATIONS'? But you have made it
a ROBBERS'DEN." The chief priests and the
scribes heard this, and began seeking how to
destroy Him for they were afraid of Him, for the
whole crowd was astonished at His teaching.
  • When evening came, they would go out of the city.

18
Mark 1120-24
  • As they were passing by in the morning, they saw
the fig tree withered from the roots up. Being
reminded, Peter said to Him, " Rabbi, look, the
fig tree which You cursed has withered."
  • And Jesus answered saying to them, " Have faith
in God. " Truly I say to you, whoever says to
this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the
sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but
believes that what he says is going to happen, it
will be granted him. "Therefore I say to you,
all things for which you pray and ask, believe
that you have received them, and they will be
    granted you.

19
The Triumphal Entry
  • Matt 219
  • "Hosanna to the Son of David!"
  • "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the
    Lord!"
  • "Hosanna in the highest!"
  • Hosanna is Hebrew for Oh Save!

20
Life or Death is up to God
  • We are not our own bosses to live or die as we
    ourselves might choose.
  • Living or dying we follow the Lord.
  • Either way we are his.
  • Christ died and rose again for this very
purpose, so that he can be our Lord both while we
live and when we die. Rom 147-9

21
Jesus is Our Example
  • Heb 121-4
  • Since we have such a huge crowd of men of faith
watching us from the grandstands, let us strip
off anything that slows us down or holds us back,
and especially those sins that wrap themselves so
tightly around our feet and trip us up and let
us run with patience the particular race that God
    has set before us.

22
  • Keep your eyes on Jesus, our leader and
    instructor.
  • He was willing to die a shameful death on the
cross because of the joy he knew would be his
afterwards and now he sits in the place of honor
    by the throne of God.

23
  • If you want to keep from becoming fainthearted
and weary, think about his patience as sinful men
did such terrible things to him.
  • After all, you have never yet struggled against
sin and temptation until you sweat great drops of
    blood.

24
Jesus Destroys Death
  • Since we, God's children, are human beings-made
of flesh and blood-he became flesh and blood too
by being born in human form for only as a human
being could he die and in dying break the power
of the devil who had the power of death.
  • Heb 214-15 TLB

25
You Dont have to be Afraid
  • Only in that way could he deliver those who
through fear of death have been living all their
lives as slaves to constant dread.

26
Jesus Warns Them
  • The Son of Man must suffer many things and be
rejected by the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the
    third day."
  • Luke 922 NASU

27
Then Challenges Them
  • And He was saying to them all, " If anyone
    wishes to come after Me,
  • he must deny himself,
  • and take up his cross daily
  • and follow Me.
  • Luke 923-25 NASU

28
Are You Ready to Die?
  • For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the
one who will save it. "For what is a man
profited if he gains the whole world, and loses
    or forfeits himself?
  • For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the
Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes
in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of
    the holy angels.
