Geographic Data The Region of Western Greece has
total extent of 11.350 square kilometres,
covering percentage of 8,6 of total of country.
It is constituted by three prefectures Achaia,
Ilia and Etoloakarnania.

The five bigger cities of region are the city of
Patras (seat of region), Agrinio, Pyrgos,
Amaliada and Aegio. So, 312.503 residents in
these cities cover 42,2 of total
population.Main Cities

Infrastructures
  • Transports
  • The RWG possesses strategic place connecting
    Peloponnese with the Sterea Hellas and the
    Continent. It is the Western Gate of Greece to
    Adriatic sea and Western Europe more generally.
  • Road network
  • The region allocates an extensive road network
    in length of 3.500 km. The central road artery
    Patras Athens is part of the main national
    axis P.A.T.E (Patras, Athens, Thessalonica,
    Evzoni) and belong in the TransEuropean
    Networks.
  • Between the big technical work completed in the
    region in the year 2004 is the suspension bridge
    of Rio-Antirio that reaches the 2,5 kilometres
    and connects Peloponnese with the mainly
    continental country.

  • Harbours
  • The harbour of Patras dominates in the region,
    because of its strategic place.
  • Passenger/car-ferry boats connect the region
    with Italy (Ankona, Brintezi, Venice), Albania,
    the Ionian islands and the Igoumenitsa bay.
  • The harbour infrastructure can serve cargo boats
    of capacity up to 25.000 tons and passenger boats
    up to 16.000 tons and length of 220 m, providing
    modern service.
  • Other harbours of the Region are the harbour of
    Aegio, Kylini, Katakolo.
  • Airports
  • The two airports that serve the region are found
    in the Araxos (neighbour of Patras) and in the
    Andravida (neighbour of Pyrgos). Each one
    allocates two corridors of landing and has
    possibilities of service of charter and
    commercial flights.

  • Infrastructures of Health
  • In the region of Western Greece functions a
    modern and extensive benefit service system of
    health. It allocates 11 public hospitals,
    included Patras General Academic Hospital and
    new Regional Hospital of Pyrgos, with total of
    2.235 beds.
  • ?bout 2.500 doctors are occupied, otherwise
    3,4 doctors correspond per 1.000 residents. In
    the region 17 Centres of Health function as
    well.
  • Cultural Infrastructure
  • The Region of Western Greece allocates richest
    cultural tradition, that springs from the
    antiquity. The most famous cultural landmark of
    Region is Ancient Olympia, birthplace of
    Olympic Contests of Antiquity. The Region
    allocates also crowd of other important
    archaeological spaces, castles, theatres,
    Monasteries, Churches e.t.c.
  • In the Region abound also the modern cultural
    organisations and festivals (the well known in
    Greece and internationally Carnival of Patras,
    the annual Musical Festival of Patras e.t.c.).
    The city of Patras allocates richest cultural
    tradition from the season where the Venetian
    ships were sailing in the Ionian Sea. The
    nomination of Patras as Cultural Capital of
    Europe in 2006, gives the possibilities for
    complete exploitation of its reach cultural
    tradition.

  • Infrastructure of education - research
  • There are two Academic Institutions and two
    Technological Educational Institutions. They
    joint allocate 45 departments and the total
    number of students is appreciated that it amounts
    in 38.000. The capital of Region is also the seat
    of University of Patras, Technological
    Educational Institution of Patras and Greek Open
    University as well. Other "academic" cities of
    region is also the Mesologgi and the Agrinio.
  • Most Educational Institutions of the Region
    allocate exceptional inquiring and instructive
    experience and participate with success in
    European inquiring programs. They closely
    collaborate also with the enterprising community,
    aiming at the implementation of inquiring
    activities results.

Gross Regional Product (G.R.P) in RWG
The economy was developed with mediocre rate of
growth. The real G. R. P. was increased with
medium annual rate of change 2,3 during the
period 1997-2001, reaching the 5,1 billion
.

The tertiary sector covers more than the two
third of G.R.P., while the contribution of
industry is lower of 20 and the primary
production lower than 15.

  • The sectors that attract the bigger investment
    activity are the manufactures, with 35,8 of
    total, the transports and communications with 10
  • and the industry with share 9,4.

At the duration of five-year period 1998-2002,
the enterprising activity was intense. In the
Region 154 new companies of legal form J.S.C.
and Ltd were founded, mainly in the services.
Their total capital amounted in 85,1 million .

  • Tourism
  • The Region of Western Greece allocates
    appreciable tourist infrastructure that
    includes 223 hotels (14,8 thousand beds), as
    well as 28 organised campings and crowd of
    auxiliary lodgings. In the Region are offered big
    possibilities for growth of various tourist
    activities as marine tourism, cultural/religious
    tourism, winter/mountainous tourism, tourism of
    adventure (trekking, rafting, kayak e.t.c.),
    ecological tourism, curative tourism, congress
    tourism e.t.c..
