    non-fiction, poetry, narrative poetry, biography,
    autobiography, etc.

    Elements of setting include geographic location,
    historical period (past, present, or future),
    season, time of day, and culture.

  • Conflict struggle between 2 opposing forces
  • Rising Action -what happens to build suspense and
    develop the conflicts
  • Climax the turning point in the story and the
    moment of greatest suspense
  • Falling Action eases the tension shows how the
    main character resolves the conflict
  • Resolution (denouement) reveals the storys
    final outcome ties up any loose ends

  • Choice of words to express what is intended

  • Dictionary definition of a word

  • Ideas and feelings associated with a word, as
    opposed to its dictionary definition (denotation)

foreshadowing -
  • When a writer provides hints that suggest future
    events in a story. Foreshadowing creates
    suspense and makes readers eager to find out what
    will happen.

    created by description, actions, and

  • Feeling of growing tension and excitement felt by
    a reader. A writer creates suspense by raising
    questions in the readers mind.
