The Oil pollution Act (OPA) gave the federal
government backup in the form of money and
equipment to prevent and quickly respond to oil
spills. Funds partially come from the national
Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund which supplies up
to one billion dollars for an accident. The Act
also created standards for extracting and
transporting oil in a safe manner to prevent oil
pollution. Finally, the OPA established penalties
for those who do not follow the requirements for
handling oil.
