Title: Omega 3 Fatty Acids Effects on Your Body What are they

1
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
  • Effects on Your Body

2
What are they?
  • Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential
fatty acids, which means that they are essential
to human health but cannot be manufactured by the
body. Therefore, you must obtain them from an
    outside source.

3
Where are they found?
  • Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish and
    certain plant oils.

4
3 Major Types
  • Alphalinolenic acid (ALA)
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
  • Docosahexanoic acid (DHA)

5
Some of the many uses
  • High Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Heart Disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Osteoporosis

6
High Cholesterol
  • Studies have shown that people who consume high
amounts of omega-3 fatty acids tend to have
increased HDL cholesterol and decreased LDL and
    triglycerides.
  • HDL good cholesterol levels
  • LDL bad cholesterol levels
  • Triglycerides fatty material that circulates in
    the blood

7
High Blood Pressure
  • Studies say that diets rich in omega-3 fatty
    acids lower blood pressure significantly.

8
Heart Disease
  • EPA and DHA help reduce risk factors for heart
    disease.
  • These substances can help prevent and treat
atherosclerosis by inhibiting the development of
plaque and blood clots, each of which tends to
    clog arteries.

9
Stroke
  • Omega-3 fatty acids prevents stroke by plaque
buildup and blood clots in the arteries that lead
    to the brain.
  • Eating at least 2 servings of fish per week can
reduce the risk of stroke by at least 50.

10
Diabetes
  • People with diabetes tend to have high
    triglyceride and low HDL levels.
  • By eating fish or taking supplements with Omega-3
fatty acids, it will lower triglycerides and
    raise HDL levels.

11
Cancer
  • Colon Cancer Animal studies have found that
have found that omega-3 fatty acids prevent the
worsening of colon cancer. EPA and DHA also
appeared to slow or even reverse the progression
of colon cancer in people with early stages.
  • Breast Cancer People who consume omega-3 fatty
acids may be less likely to develop breast
cancer. Also, the risk from dying from breast
    cancer may be less.
  • Prostate Cancer Lab and animal studies indicate
that omega-3 fatty acids may inhibit the growth
of prostate cancer. More research in this area
    is needed.

12
Osteoporosis
  • Studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids, such as
EPA help increase calcium levels in the body,
deposit of calcium in the bones, and improve bone
    strength.
  • In a study of women over 65 with osteoporosis,
those given supplements experienced less bone
loss over 3 years than those who were given a
    placebo.

13
Some more uses
  • Mental Disorders
  • Weight Loss
  • Eating Disorders
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Skin Disorders
  • Arthritis
  • and even Menstruation
