Title: THE INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE

1
THE INSPIRATIONOF THE BIBLE
  • 2 Timothy 316-17

2
No Study More Significant
  • If we reject the inspiration of the Bible we
    reject the Bible.
  • If we reject the Bible we reject God and His Son
    Jesus Christ.
  • If we reject God and Jesus we reject salvation.

3
If The Bible Is Not Inspired
  • We cannot know who God is
  • We cannot know how to live to please Him
  • We cannot know about rewards and punishments.
  • There is no religious authority.

4
WHAT WE WILL STUDY TODAY
  • Define inspiration.
  • Look at some false theories of inspiration.
  • Look at what the Bible teaches about its
    inspiration.

5
Inspiration Defined
  • 2 Timothy 316-17 All Scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness, that the man of God
may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every
    good work.
  • Means God-breathed - Breathed out of God.
  • May not know the how of inspiration, but we
know that God originated the Scriptures.

6
Inspiration Defined
  • 2 Peter 120-21 knowing this first, that no
prophecy of Scripture is of any private
interpretation, for prophecy never came by the
will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they
were moved by the Holy Spirit.
  • Never came by the will of man.
  • Moved by the Holy Spirit.

7
Inspiration Defined
  • to bear, carry, is rendered being moved in 2
Peter 121, signifying that they were borne
along, or impelled, by the Holy Spirits power,
not acting according to their own wills, or
simply expressing their own thoughts, but
expressing the mind of God in words provided and
ministered by Him. (Vines Word Studies of the
    Greek New Testament).

8
Inspiration Defined
  • Every word in the Bible originated with God.
  • Not one word is in the Bible by the will of man.
  • Every word is there by the will of God working
    through inspired men.
  • God is the author of the Bible.
  • This is how men were preserved from error in what
    they wrote.

9
False Theories of Inspiration
  • General Inspiration Theory.
  • The Bible Contains the Word of God Theory.
  • Thought Inspiration Theory.
  • Partial Inspiration Theory.
  • Denies the authority of the Scriptures.
  • Leads to disrespect for the Bible.
  • Any theory that denies, ignores, or contradicts
what the Bible teaches about itself must be
    rejected!

10
WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES ABOUT INSPIRATION
  • 2 Timothy 316-17
  • Inspiration of God God Breathed.
  • Every word in the Bible was put there by God.
  • Moved by the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 121).

11
Key Words In2 Timothy 316-17
  • All
  • Not part, some of, much of, or most of.
  • Every part, the whole, the entirety.
  • Scripture
  • Every inspired word of God.
  • Both the Old Testament and New Testament.

12
Inspired Men Knew They Were Writing Scripture
  • 2 Peter 315-16 and consider that the
longsuffering of our Lord is salvation as also
our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom
given to him, has written to you, as also in all
his epistles, speaking in them of these things,
in which are some things hard to understand,
which untaught and unstable people twist to their
own destruction, as they do also the rest of the
    Scriptures.

13
2 Peter 119-21
  • And so, we have the prophetic word confirmed,
which you do well to heed as a light that shines
in a dark place, until the day dawns and the
morning star rises in your hearts knowing this
first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any
private interpretation, for prophecy never came
by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as
they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

14
2 Peter 119-21
  • prophecy of Scripture
  • Could include foretelling the future.
  • Most essential meaning is of one person speaking
    for another.
  • Inspired men did not speak from or for
themselves, but from and for God.

15
2 Peter 119-21
  • is of any private interpretation.
  • to loose, solve, explain, denotes a solution,
explanation, literally means a release (Vine,
    page 268).
  • Inspired writers did not put their own
    construction on what they wrote.
  • Not a private explanation or releasing.
  • It did not come from within man or from mans
    imagination, reasoning, or interpretation.

16
2 Peter 119-21
  • were moved by the Holy Spirit.
  • moved, impelled by the power of the Holy
    Spirit, carried, or borne along.
  • This explains the source of the prophecy of
Scripture, and how fallible men could produce an
    infallible book!

17
1 Corinthians 21-13
  • V. 1-2 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did
not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom
declaring to you the testimony of God. For I
determined not to know anything among you except
    Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
  • Paul declared
  • The testimony of God.
  • Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
  • The gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ.

18
1 Corinthians 21-13
  • V.3-5 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and
in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching
were not with persuasive words of human wisdom,
but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
that your faith should not be in the wisdom of
men but in the power of God.
  • Pauls speech and preaching was with words.
  • Verbal inspiration.

19
1 Corinthians 21-13
  • V. 6-8 However, we speak wisdom among those who
are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor
of the rulers of this age, who are coming to
nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a
mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained
before the ages for our glory, which none of the
rulers of this age knew for had they known, they
would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

20
1 Corinthians 21-13
  • V. 9-11 but as it is written Eye has not seen,
nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of
man the things which God has prepared for those
who love Him. But God has revealed them to us
through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all
things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man
knows the things of a man except the spirit of
man which is in him? Even so no one knows the
things of God except the Spirit of God.

21
1 Corinthians 21-13
  • V. 11-13 Now we have received, not the spirit of
the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that
we might know the things that have been freely
given to us by God. These things we also speak,
not in words which mans wisdom teaches, but
which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing
    spiritual things with spiritual.
  • This is verbal inspiration.
  • The Holy Spirit gave Paul the very words.

22
Ephesians 33-5
  • how that by revelation he made known to me the
mystery (as I have briefly written already, by
which, when you read, you may understand my
knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in
other ages was not made known to the sons of men,
as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His
    holy apostles and prophets.
  • To Paul directly by the Holy Spirit.
  • To the Ephesians by what Paul wrote.

23
