Greek Mythology
The ancient Greeks created their own
world of gods that were like humans.

Olympian Gods and Goddesses
  • Were the main and strongest gods
  • They ruled mankind and lived in Mount Olympus,
    the highest mountain in Greece
  • There were fourteen Olympian Gods and Goddesses

Aphrodite
  • Goddess of love, lust and beauty.
  • Wife of Hephastus and lover of Ares.
  • Known as the most beautiful of the Greek
    goddesses.
  • Her symbols are the scepter (a long rod/stick),
    myrtle (shrub with green leaves and violet blue
    flowers) and the dove.

Apollo
  • God of music, prophecies (can tell what is going
    to happen in the future), poetry and archery.
    Also said to be the god of light and truth.
  • Is Artemiss twin brother and son of Zeus.
  • His symbols are the bow, lyre (stringed musical
    instrument) and laurel (shrub with small yellow
    white leaves).

Demeter
  • Goddess of fertility, grain and harvest.
  • Sister of Zeus.
  • Symbols are the sceptre (a long rod / stick),
    torch and corn.

Ares
  • God of war, madness and death.
  • Brother to Athena and son of Zeus.
  • Had an affair with Aphrodite.
  • His symbols are vultures (birds of prey), dogs,
    boars (wild pigs) and spears.

Artemis
  • Goddess of the hunt , wild things and the moon.
  • Apollo is her twin brother.
  • Her symbols are the bow, dogs and deer.

Athena
  • Goddess of wisdom, war, crafts and reason
    (having good sense and judgement).
  • Sister of Ares and daughter of Zeus.
  • Wisest of the Gods.
  • Her symbols are the owl and the olive tree.

Dionysus
  • God of wine, parties, festivals, madness and
    merriment.
  • He represents the power and benefits of wine.
  • His symbols are the grape vine and ivy.

Hades
  • God of the underworld.
  • Brother of Poseidon, Zeus and Hera.
  • His symbols are the bident ( 2 pronged sword),
    the Helm of Darkness (helmet) and the three
    headed dog, Cerberus.

Hephaestus
  • God of fire, the forge and blacksmiths.
  • He had weak legs and was thrown off Mount
    Olympus as a baby by his mother.
  • He makes armour for the Gods.
  • Son of Hera.
  • Married to Aphrodite who didnt love him because
    he was deformed.
  • He had a daughter called Pandora.
  • His symbols are an axe, a hammer and a flame.

Hera
  • Goddess of marriage, women and childbirth.
  • Zeus wife and sister.
  • Her symbols are the sceptre, diadem (ornamental,
    jewelled headress) and the peacock.

Hermes
  • God of flight, thieves and travellers.
  • Messenger of the Gods.
  • Likes to trick people.
  • He invented the lyre (stringed musical
    instrument).
  • His symbols are the caduceus (rod with wings) and
    winged boots..

Hestia
  • Goddess of the hearth, the centre of the
    household.
  • Gave up her seat as one of the 12 Olympians to
    look after the sacred flame on Mount Olympus.
  • Symbol is the hearth.

Poseidon
  • God of the sea and earthquakes..
  • He created horses from sea foam.
  • His symbols are horses, sea foam, dolphins and
    the trident (three pronged pole).

Zeus
  • The King of the Gods and the ruler of Mount
    Olympus.
  • The God of sky and thunder.
  • His symbols are the thunderbolt, eagle, bull and
    the oak.
