Title: Jane Austen

1
Jane Austen
  • 1775 - 1817

2
Jane Austen
  • Austen published her novels anonymously, so she
did not become famous during her lifetime.
  • They were well-received, but not particularly
    well-known.

3
Six Novels
  • Jane Austen wrote six novels
  • Sense and Sensibility (1811)
  • Pride and Prejudice (1813)
  • Mansfield Park (1814)
  • Emma (1815)
  • Northanger Abbey
  • Persuasion (Both published after her
    death)

4
Heroine
  • They all have a female central character who gets
married at the end of the book.
  • Jane Austen was writing about a world that was
    very familiar to her.

5
Themes
  • Money - Jane Austens heroines are usually middle
class. They are not poor, but they are
    not rich either.
  • Love and marriage - Marriage was a form of
    financial transaction for
women in this time. All of Austens
    heroines marry for LOVE.
  • Sisters/families - For Austens heroines families
    sometimes offer love and support,
    sometimes they provide obstacles.
  • .

6
Sense and Sensibility
  • How these themes are used in Sense and
    Sensibility..

7
Money
  • Money is very important in this novel.
  • The Dashwood sisters are made poor because they
are women and therefore cannot inherit.
  • Women were financially at the mercy of their male
    relatives.

8
Love and Marriage
  • For men, marriage was a way to make more money or
    improve their status.
  • Willoughby marries Miss. Gray when his Aunt
    disinherits him.
  • Edward stands by Lucy when his mother disinherits
    him.

9
Families
  • The relationship between the two sisters may be
the most important one in the novel.
  • However it is the actions of their stepbrother
that has left them with no money.

10
Change
  • At the end of the novel, Marianne has changed
    very much.
  • A lot of people hate that Jane Austen made her
marry Colonel Brandonwhat do you think?

11
Questions
  • How are Marianne and Elinor different?
  • Elinor keep her feelings private to avoid
hurting her family. Marianne cannot do this.
  • Do you think Marianne is a rude person?
  • You may find Marianne rude, however, she never
lies, so if she gives a compliment she means it.

12
Questions
  • How would their lives be different if they had
    inherited their fathers money?
  • Willoughby would have proposed to Marianne.
  • Marianne represents sensibility in this novel,
    who represents only sense?
  • The selfish characters Fanny, John, Lucy
  • Who should Marianne marry?
  • Decide for yourself.

13
Pride and Prejudice
  • Pride and Prejudice is the story of Elizabeth
    Bennet and Mr. Darcy.
  • Are their similarities between this story and
    Sense and Sensibility..?

14
Pride and Prejudice
  • Mr. Darcy is Pride and Elizabeth Bennet is
    Prejudice.
  • For Jane Austen pride and prejudice werent
always badbut Darcy and Elizabeth have too much.
  • They BOTH must change in order to be able to fall
    in love and marry.

15
Elizabeth Bennet
  • Elizabeth is the second of five sisters.
  • They are not particularly rich and with no
brothers their financial security depends upon
    them marrying well.
  • Elizabeth is clever and pretty and has strong
    opinions.

16
Why is Elizabeth prejudiced against Darcy?
  • He does not dance with her when they first meet.
  • He breaks up Jane (her eldest sister) and his
    friend Mr. Bingley.
  • Her friend Mr. Wickham has told her that Mr.
    Darcy has treated him badly.

17
Two Proposals
  • Mr. Darcy is the only Austen hero who proposes
twice to the woman he loves.
  • The first proposal he makes is far too PROUD. He
    insults Lizzie and her family.

18
Mr.Willoughby and Mr. Wickham
  • Both Sense and Sensibility and Pride and
Prejudice include a story of a seducer.
  • They are both handsome and charming.
  • Wickham tells Elizabeth lies about Darcy and her
PREJUDICE against him leads her to believe them.

19
The Story of the Fallen Woman
  • Colonel Brandon tells Elinor how Willoughby has
    seduced Beth.
  • In Pride and Prejudice Darcy tells Elizabeth how
Wickham tried to marry his sister for her
    fortune.
  • Wickhham later seduces Elizabeths youngest
    sister, Lydia.

20
A Change in Darcy
  • Darcy slowly realises how much he loves Lizzie
and starts to try much harder to be nice to her.
  • Lizzie now knows that Wickham lied to her and is
able to see more good in him.

21
Pemberly
  • Mr. Darcy is very rich and has a beautiful house
    called Pemberly.
  • When Elizabeth is on holiday with her Aunt and
Uncle they go to visit the house, thinking that
    Mr. Darcy is away.
  • But he comes back unexpectedly!!!

22
A Change in Darcy
  • He encourages Bingley to propose to Jane.
  • His final change comes when he helps the Bennet
family by forcing Wickham to marry Lydia.
  • He keeps it a secret that he helped, even from
    Lizzie.

23
Second Proposal
  • Darcys second proposal is much better than the
    first!!!
  • Like Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice
    ends with a double wedding.

24
Emma
  • The story of Emma Woodhouse and Mr. Knightley.
  • Emma is a kind hearted, affectionate women but
she is also spoilt and snobbish.
  • She must CHANGE before she and Mr. Knightley can
    fall in love.

25
Persuasion
  • The story of Anne Eliot and Captain Wentworth.
  • Anne and Captain Wentworth were in love many
    years before.
  • She was convinced not to marry him, because he
    was poor.
  • They have to fall in love all over again.

26
Persuasion
  • Persuasion is different to the other Austen
novels because it is all about the emotional
journey of the heroine and not the hero.
  • It is all about Anne and how she feels about
    meeting Wentworth again.
