FIREWIRE -- IEEE 1394 Standard

• Standard for a High Performance Serial Bus
• Originally started in 1986 to unify different
  serial buses per the request of the IEEE
  Microprocessor Standards Committee
• Industries needed an improved external I/O
  interconnect for multimedia information
• Required real-time transport, higher data rates,
  and a more rugged cable and connector system
