History of Partnership Development
  • Region One Education Service Center employed a
    CTE specialist before Tech Prep started in the
    Valley
  • Tech Prep started in 1991-92
  • Region One serves 7 counties and 37 ISDs as well
    as other entities TPRGV serves 4 counties and 32
    ISDs, plus 1 charter school

  • Region One and TPRGV began partnering in the
    early years of Tech Prep in the
    Valleycollaboration now is broad and continuing
    to grow
  • Collaboration helps both organizations to succeed
    in their missions, which are complementary and
    non-duplicative

    year plans with baccalaureate linkages (piloting
    with TSTC)San Benito CISD first district for all
    high school programs

    including 37 school districts and local colleges,
    for alignment with AchieveTexas programs of study
  • Training and delivering of approximately 750
    counselor toolkits

Academic Leadership Alliance
  • Collaboration between Tech Prep, Region One, and
    the McAllen Economic Development Corporation, and
    participating school districts
  • Past participating school districts include
    Hidalgo ISD, McAllen ISD, Mission CISD, Sharyland
    ISD, and La Joya ISD 5 new districts being added
    this year
  • Teachers and counselors work 2- to 3 four-day
    weeks in areas related to the subjects they teach
  • Culinary Arts teacher works at a restaurant
  • Science teacher works at an engineering firm
  • Lesson writing (Careers in Actionplaced on TPRGV
    website)
  • Given 1 week to write lesson plans, incorporating
    their experiences into 3 lessons
  • Teachers and Counselors are required to implement
    lessons in their classrooms and with students.
    Implementation is monitored by District
    Coordinator.

  • 16,940 high school participants
  • 7,096 Tech Prep Texas Scholar graduates
  • Actual savings reported by local colleges in
    2006-2007 was 3,846,488 for articulated and
    dual-credit courses combined 5,710 students
    received 24,743 college credits

  • Data collected from South Texas College, Texas
    Southmost College, and Texas State Technical
    College Harlingen
  • Results data collected failed to prove two of
    the research hypotheses
  • College Entrance Exam Passing Rates No
    statistically significant difference between Tech
    Prep and non-Tech Prep postsecondary students at
    time of matriculation to two-year postsecondary
    institution.
  • GPA at Time of College Graduation No
    statistically significant difference between Tech
    Prep and non-Tech Prep students at time of
    graduation from two-year postsecondary
    institution

  • Two important research hypotheses were supported
    by the results of research
  • Graduating from College Number of Tech Prep
    college graduates was more than double that of
    non-Tech Prep college graduates (Tech Prep 58
    of 223 graduated non-Tech Prep 24 of 223
    graduated)
  • Time of Graduation Tech Prep students graduated
    almost two semesters sooner than non-Tech Prep
    students (Tech Prep 8.35 semesters) non-Tech
    Prep 10.14 semesters)

  • Implications of findings are significant for the
    College for Texans/Closing the Gaps campaign
  • Region One ESC/Tech Prep RGV study that is
    currently underway with UT Dallas will enhance
    these findings

Study Being Conducted in 2008
  • Collaborative work of Tech Prep RGV and Region
    One ESC with Texas Schools Project at the
    University of Texas at Dallas
  • School districts throughout Region One will pay
    fees to have high schools join National Student
    Clearinghouse for the study
  • Studyunderway nowwill compare performance of
    Tech Prep and CTE students with that of other
    students to learn more about college transition
    and success
