PCI and NSBE Jr.
Program Zone Functional
  • The Pre-College Initiative Program is the focus
    of the National Society of Black Engineers'
    effort to promote college, academics, technology,
    and leadership to pre-college students.
  • NSBE Jr. is a pre-college program which shall
    focus on the academic development, technical
    development, and leadership development of
    pre-college students. It shall maintain chapters
    at high schools and junior high schools under the
    oversight of local NSBE chapters.
  • NSBE Jr. is the pre-college membership and
    chapter designation for pre-college students and
    institutions that are officially chartered with
    NSBE.

    African-American youth, encourage their

  • Adopt T.O.R.C.H. as the primary community service
    activity for chapter.
  • Select a point person to be T.O.R.C.H.
    Coordinator

    chapter.

Chapter liaison with CTC site/Complete Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU)
  • First, determine what type of resources the
    chapter can bring to local CTCs and their
    existing programs.
  • Second, determine how many hours can be committed
    to the program and how many members can volunteer
    in a given month.
  • Next, establish clear and common volunteer
    objectives with the CTC site Program Director.
  • Finally, complete a Memorandum of Understanding
    (MOU) with chapter CTC site and forward it to
    NSBE WHQ.

Recruit and Train NSBE member volunteers / Track
individual and chapter volunteer hours
  • Review with chapter members the NSBE CTC
    Volunteer Expectations guidelines prior to the
    start of each all community service projects.
  • An established code of conduct and expectations
    has been developed for the T.O.R.C.H. Community
    Service Initiative.
  • All participants should review the guidelines
    prior to committing to participate on site.
  • It is also recommended that NSBE volunteers
    review the guidelines and expectations specific
    to each CTC site.
  • A regularly scheduled program session for
    children and/or adults to increase technical
    knowledge from your chapter members
  • A one time or short project in which chapter
    members and sponsors offer seminars regarding
    technological advancement.

applies each engineering discipline Strategy
Create craft activities that can be related and
applied to each engineering discipline.

Civil Engineering Create craft activities that
can be related and applied to Civil
Engineering. Activity (1) Use gum drops and
toothpicks to build a build a bridge. Using
specified height, length, and width dimension
make the activity into a timed competition. Give
reward/prize for the design, strength,
etc. TORCH Activity should be linked back into
computer programs such as AUTOCAD or Paint. This
will allow CTC participants to use computer
programs to create designs electronically.
Similar activities may be substituted.

Chemical Engineering Create an experiment that is
simple that can be related and applied to
Chemical Engineering. Activity (1) Create a
Hurricane in a bottle. Mix oil and water in a
clear bottle along with pieces of aluminum foil.
When shaken this will give the illusion of a
hurricane. Activity (2) Create slime polymers.
Use Elmer's White Glue, borax and water to cause
a chemical reaction that would create a slime
substance (putty). TORCH Coordinators should
use websites such as www.weather.com,
www.noaa.gov, http//earthquake.usgs.gov to show
CTC participant how to use such sites to track
changes in the weather for research purposes.
Similar activities maybe substituted.

Mechanical Engineering and Electrical
Engineering Create activities that can be related
and applied to Mechanical Engineering. Activity
(1) Use a small electrical motor, AA battery,
electrical wire, a small box, and paper to create
a hand- held electrical fan. TORCH Use computer
program Microsoft Excel to help CTC participants
create a data sheet. Data sheets should record
life of battery, acceleration, and speed of
motor, rpms, etc. This will teach CTC participant
how to create and manage collected data. Similar
activities maybe substituted.

Computer Engineering Create activities that can
be related and applied to Computer
Engineering. Activity (1) Use computer programs
such as C, MATLAB, etc. to teach CTC
participants how to create computer programs.

  • A Walk For Education "Bringing the Community to
    Education

Goal Increase Improve Region III A Walk for
Education Strategy Utilize national guidelines
for the program. Introduce walk for education to
chapter after RLC, generate the hype for FRC
launch. Demonstrate to chapter the significance
in participating in the Regional Walk for
Education. Widely publicize AWFE within chapter.
Measures Begin planning to attend AWFE
directly after RLC, August 10-13, 2006. Create a
workshop regarding AWFE. Work with programs zone
as well as regional board and national
counterparts to stay informed.
