Objectives

• After completing this presentation, the learner
  will be able to
• Incorporate the proxy URL into links to online
  articles
• Determine which method of linking to a journal
  article is most appropriate

• Persistent Link
• Link from a database that goes directly to an
  article
• Is not session dependent
• Why this is important
• Copying URL from address bar typically gives you
  only a session link
• Not reusable, i.e. it is viable only for the
  session you have going at that time

• A type of persistent link
• Provides current information about location of
  article on on the Internet
• Where the digital object (i.e. article) resides
  (i.e. the URL) may change DOI will not change

  registered students and current faculty and staff
• Why this is important
• Licensed resources require the proxy URL for
  access

• Means by which we authenticate users who are not

• Could be at home, work, or on a regional campus
• Why this is important
• Proxy URL must be incorporated into every
  licensed article, book, or database link that
  students are expected to view

• Search for your article in Medline, PsycINFO,
  Sociological Abstracts, Academic Search Premier,
  or other relevant Ovid or Ebsco database

• Many free journals can be accessed by copying the

• Not sure if free?
• Add the proxy information to the URL
• Test before publishing to be certain it works!

When You Cant Link to an Article

• Not all articles can be linked to from the
  outside
• User has to search database to access
• Give students complete citation to locate article
• Author(s) of the article, Title of the article,
  Journal, Year, Volume, Issue, Date, pages.
