Self-Efficacy
  • A persons belief about their abilities produce
at a specific expectation level for tasks in
    their lives.
  • This affects our motivation, choices, and
    cognitions.
  • Self-efficacy is content specific. It deals with
how a child feels about their ability in a
    specific area.

3
Sources Of Self- Efficacy
  • Mastery experiences- Success in an area builds
the confidence that future success can be
attained. Failure lowers a youths belief that
they can succeed in that area in the future.
  • Vicarious experiences- Seeing people similar to
you succeed in an area through effort makes it
more realistic that success can be attained with
a similar amount of effort. Viewing failure by
persons similar to you who have made an effort
lowers a persons confidence in their own ability.
This is greatly due to that persons
identification of the similarity between them and
    the model.
  • Social persuasion- Youth who are verbally
persuaded that they have the skills and talent to
complete a task are more prone to try harder.
Youth who are persuaded that they dont have the
skills are more prone to avoid challenges and
give up quickly when facing challenges.
  • Emotional states- Youth look at their feelings of
anxiety and stress and relate it to their
competence in an area. Young people who have
high self-efficacy look at nervousness as a
motivator while youth with low self efficacy look
    at stress as debilitating.

4
Cognitive Process
  • The higher the amount of self-efficacy the more
challenging tasks young people are willing to
    engage in.
  • Self-efficacy shapes the forethought and
    anticipatory scenarios that people rehearse
    before engaging in an event.
  • A youths mental capacity to handle long term
stressors will be enhanced by a youths believing
    in their own potential.

5
What We Do
  • Target at risk males based primarily on behavior.
Approximately 20 of each grade level by inviting
    them to join this club.
  • Create an environment where they are willing and
able to listen to professionals teach them skills
that they will need to know in order to
    successfully handle adulthood.
  • Teach them paths to their dreams and how to find
    information to further their dreams.
  • Teach leadership, responsibility, and
accountability for all factors that affect their
    lives.
  • Teach children logical problem solving.
  • Show students links between the decisions that
they make now and how it will affect them in
    years to come.
  • Create relationships between students and staff
personnel where they are able to seek out advice
for problems that they may be encountering.
  • Constant encouragement to handle all life
    circumstances.
  • One on one interventions with students to refocus
    and assist.

6
Behind The Scenes
