Wardenclyffe TowerFree Energy for All?
  • Presented by
  • Anuhya Uppula
  • Eng 24 Seminar
  • 4/17/06

2
When Did it Happen?
  • 5 years after Niagara Falls went on-air
  • Right after Colorado Springs experiments
  • Construction took place between years 1901-1917

3
Where Did it Happen?
  • Located in Long Island
  • A remote place, 65 miles from Brooklyn
  • The place was called Wardenclyffe after James
    Warden
  • It was 200 acres of land

4
Why Did it Happen?
  • There was tension about who, Tesla or Marconi,
would be first in creating a radio signal
    transmission.
  • The future he envisioned with his inventions is
the one we are witnessing today they include
    interconnected radio-telephone networks,
    synchronized time signals, instantaneous stock
    reports, pocket receivers, private
communications, press radio service. This he
    collectively called World System of
    intelligent transmission.

Portrait of the envisioned World System
5
  • His promotional brochure for World System
    included the following
  • The interconnection of the existing telegraph
exchanges or offices all around the world
  • The establishment of a secret and noninterferable
    government telegraph service
  • The interconnection of all the present telephone
exchanges or office on the globe
  • The universal distribution of general news, by
telegraph or telephone, in connection with the
    press
  • The establishment of intelligence transmission
    for exclusive private use
  • The interconnection and operation of all stock
    tickers of the world
  • The establishment of a World System of musical
    distribution, etc
  • The universal registration of time by cheap
clocks indicating the hour with astronomical
precision and requiring no 9. attention whatever
  • The world transmission of typed or handwritten
    characters, letters, etc,
  • The establishment of a universal marine service
enabling the navigators of all ships to steer
perfectly without 11. compass, to determine the
exact location, hour, and speed to prevent
    collisions and disasters, etc,
  • The inauguration of a system of world printing on
    land and sea
  • The world reproduction of photographic pictures
and all kinds of drawings or records.
  • All this he wanted to demonstrate with his secret
    technology of wireless power transmission.

6
What exactly was it?
  • The project was meant to transmit power
wirelessly. In order to do so, energy needs to be
in high frequency waves so it can be focused
without getting diluted before reaching the
    destination.
  • Disturbed charge of ground and air method.
  • 1) Type-one design atmospheric conduction- Telsa
wished to use the Earths charged layer of
atmosphere (known as the ionosphere) as a
    conductor of energy.
  • 2) Type-two design earths resonance- the earth
    would act as a conductor.

Two of Teslas magnifier designs used as a power
source.
7
Free Energy
  • Free Energy creating standing waves inside the
earth (called resonance) requires minimal energy.
Anyone can then tap into the earth and take
energy from the surface. This energy is
    essentially free.
  • The Tower could magnify energy of the earth
(through resonance) and transmit it to different
parts of the world. Therefore, it was also known
    as 'Magnifying Transmitter.

8
The Tower
  • The transmitting station is an octagonal tower
    and pyramidal in shape.
  • 187 feet high
  • Inside the tower, an electromagnetic oscillator
could emit frequences from extra low to the extra
    high range.
  • The sphere being built on the top of the tower
was 55 tons of steel. The ball was to act as a
capacitator, to hold electrical energy and
release it as and when needed.
  • Iron pipes dived 300 feet into the Earth.
  • In Teslas words, it is necessary for the
machine to get a grip of the earth, otherwise it
cannot shake the earth. It has to have a grip so
that the whole of this globe can quiver.

9
Who was Involved?
  • J.P Morgan was Teslas only investor.
  • The Tower is named after James Warden, who gave
Tesla the land for the building.
  • Stanford White and W.D. Crow, two of the most
famous architects were involved in building the
    tower.

Some workers of the project sitting at the base
of the towers foundation.
10
Did it Succeed?
  • In a sense, the project did not succeed because
it was abandoned due to lack of funds.
  • The economy did not favor the situation
inflation worsened the situation and Tesla was
forced to reveal his true plans for wireless
    power transmission.
  • The project was abandoned without ever building
the spherical steel ball at the top.
  • Newspapers of the time labeled Wardenclyffe
    "Tesla's million-dollar folly."
  • He cursed the world for his once again-occcured
misfortune, It is not a dream but a simple feat
    of scientific electrical engineering, only
    expensiveblind, fainthearted, doubting world
  • Remains of the Tesla Wireless Tower Base at the
Wardenclyffe plant on Long Island after removal
of tower.  It appears the shaft's wooden shoring
has given way, allowing the surrounding soil to
be washed into the hole.  In this photo the
undercut portion of the concrete foundation is in
    the process of collapse.

11
  • In another sense, the project did succeed
Teslas visions for a World System have come
true. We have only to look at satellites, radios,
and GPS (Global Positioning System) to observe
Teslas century old dream come true.
