Remember the Website
Personal Web Page and Plan (adapted from Judy
Strausss 324 class assignment).  The personal
web pages need to include a home page, your site
plan, your resume, special interest page(s).  The
site plan should describe the  global
organization (links to other pages). The plan
should be no more than 1 page in length.  The
special interest page should add value to the web
by expanding upon one of your special interests.
This page should include descriptions, links, and
provide something unique to the web community.
The Web pages can be posted on the OIT server.
You need an OIT account to do this.   Required
technical elements a statement of purpose on
your home page, global site menu bar, background
color or pattern, your picture posted on the
site, credit page or footnotes giving credit for
intellectual property and use of images, at least
a paragraph or two of original text for most
required pages, your name as a page designer,
working email link, link to the class website, a
number of external links.  Evaluation The
emphasis is on the content and uniqueness of your
site. Meeting the required technical elements is
worth 50 (each element is worth 5). The
remaining 50 is based on content and design
features. The site should add some value to the
web community. The overall consistency,
organization and appearance of pages are
important. The menu bars and flow of the site
should be well thought out and executed.

  • After meeting technical requirements, emphasis is

  • Content adds value to web community. Be creative
    and have fun with this part. Key here is to
    create Content!
  • Overall consistency, organization, and appearance
    are important. The menu bars and flow of the
    site should be well thought out and executed.

Why Front page?
  • WYSIWYG as opposed to HTML
  • Widely used in real world. Will be the
    wordprocessing of the future.
  • Simpler than Dreamweaver (which is better for
    hard core development).
  • Its the program that Milne created his web pages
    with.

Front page Tutorial
  • Create a web (a collection of folders and pages)
  • Put files (pages, images) in folders
  • Create Global navigation system
  • Work on page content and features
  • FTP website to OIT and Publish

Opening Web
  • Create new web (File, new web page).
  • Select one page web and specify location of the
    new web.
  • Create a new folder named pages. This keeps your
    website nice and tidy.

Navigation View
  • Go to navigation view
  • From menu, select format, and shared borders.
    Apply to all pages.
  • Create all the pages you will need using file,
    new page command. (You should have this planned
    out first).
  • Rename home page and other pages. Note that home
    page remains index.htm. This is important to
    start up webpage.
  • Rearrange pages in the desired tree structure by
    dragging and clicking.

  • Use child level. Also check home and page.
  • Import graphics to image folder.

Tables, Text, and Pictures
  • Tables are a great create way to organize your
    page. You can make the table lines invisible for
    more professional look by cell pad 0. Note you
    can nest tables merge and split cells.
  • Use cell properties to position text. Text can
    be resized appropriately. Use shift return to
    get single space returns, otherwise it will be
    double spaced.
  • Import all pictures to the image folder of the
    web. Store all graphical elements here.
    Otherwise they will be lost when you publish web
    on a server.

Adding Links
  • Links to other pages in web by clicking hyperlink
    symbol and selecting page
  • Links with in the page called bookmarks. Insert
    bookmark target. Then insert your bookmark using
    hyperlink symbol approach.
  • Links to external websites by typing in URL.
    Note you can go to specific pages. Dont forget
    to link to class website.
  • Links to email by going to hyperlink symbol and
    then clicking on envelope
  • Graphics can be linked. Also, hot links on
    portions of pictures is possible.

  • Get hands on experience
  • Work through examples shown in class
