- Externship Partners- Boston Reed has built
partnerships with 4935 medical facilities and
pharmacies so students can complete the
externship portion of the program. - Externship Outcomes- 98 of students complete the
externship portion of the program successfully.
Of those completing, 50 received an excellent
rating and 44 received an outstanding rating. - Job Placement While we do not offer a formal job
placement program, 85 of those graduates self-
reporting are using the skills they learned in a
job or another educational setting.
4Health Industry Need
- Six of the ten fastest growing occupations from
2005-12 are in the allied health field. - According to the US Department of Labor the need
for Pharmacy Technicians is expected to grow 30
by 2012 - Texas announced a future need of 45,000 nurses.
For every nurse needed there are dozens of allied
health jobs connected to that same location. - Walgreens recently announced they will hire
10,000 pharmacy technicians over the next 5
years.
5Health Industry Need
- The amount of five major painkillers sold at
retail establishments rose 90 percent between
1997 and 2005, according to Drug Enforcement
Administration figures. Why? People with cancer
are surviving longer, elderly people are living
longer (Associated Press). - The federal government is predicting a shortage
of close to 1 million nurses in the U.S. by 2020,
according to a report released in July by
PricewaterhouseCoopers Health Research
Institute. Porter said the projected shortage,
coupled with the aging population of the U.S., is
a perfect storm.

the pharmacists to spend more time delivering
pharmaceutical services such as counseling
patients. - Many states allow 2 to 3 pharmacy technicians per
pharmacist - Texas law requiring 2 Pharmacy Techs per shift

13Requirements for the course
- Access to the Internet, an email account and a
printer are required. - Required weekly handouts for the course are
available online and must be printed out and
brought to each class session. Print out the
first weeks materials prior to the first class
session. - ENGLISH LANGUAGE MATH SCREENING ASSESSMENT
- In order to succeed in the course you must have a
basic mastery of the English language as well as
knowledge of basic mathematical calculations. - Will be done in the first class session.

- Externship placement coordinated by Boston Reed
staff - Boston Reed has contracts with national retail
pharmacies outpatient clinic and physicians
offices - Hours depend upon your availability
- Students placed within 90 days of course
completion if available 40 hrs/wk, 180 days after
course completion if less than 40 hrs/wk - Not paid during externship
15Pre-Requisites
- For Trainee Externship Placement
- Registration in the State of Texas as a Tech in
Training will be completed at beginning of
course. - Competency in or completion of basic computer
operations - Proof of completion of CPR for the healthcare
provider, proof of a current physical
examination, including tuberculosis screening - Submit resume
- For Pharmacy Technician Registration with the
State of Texas - 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Complete PTCB test
16State of Texas Requirements for Pharmacy
Technician
- Complete hours and pass BR tests and homework
assignments - Complete externship to receive Certificate of
Completion - Take PCTB Test
- Mail letter with registration form, PTCB results,
and 83 payment to State licensing - There will be a background check
17National Certification
- National Certification of Pharmacy
Technicians - A Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) has
successfully passed the national Pharmacy
Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. This
exam tests the knowledge and skills required of a
Pharmacy Technician. - Certification is required to register as a
Pharmacy Technician in Texas. - Practice exams and textbook will be included with
your course curriculum
