Range Supervision
  • The Range Officer must be alert to conditions
which may be dangerous to participants and take
    action.
  • The Range Officer must be focused on the shooters
AT ALL TIMES while the range is open. This isnt
    the place for idle conversation.
  • The Range Officer is the ultimate authority on
    the BB Gun range.

7
Range Flag / Open Range
  • The red range flag must always be flown when the
    range is open.
  • Anytime the range is not open, the flag must be
down, and all BB Guns must be LOCKED in the
    lockbox.

BB Gun Range Layout
  • Following is the recommended range layout for all
Twin Valley Council Cub Scout BB Gun activities.
  • Range should be constructed using fence posts and
    yellow caution tape.
  • Targets should be clothes pinned top and bottom
to twine run between two fence posts.
  • Shooting line between shooters and targets should
be at knee level of the boys.
  • Keeps the boys from going downrange
  • Doesnt interfere with their shooting.

10
Range Layout
11
Firing position
  • If possible, the range should be set up so the
boys are shooting from tables or are prone on a
tarp. Standing is NOT a recommended shooting
    position for Cub Scouts.

12
BB Guns Range Rules
  • The boys should always
  • Know and obey all range commands.
  • Keep their guns on the table told to pick them
    up.
  • Only begin firing when told to begin.
  • Always keep their guns pointed down range.
  • Shoot only at the targets.
  • Always walk at the BB Gun range.

13
Posted BB Guns Range Rules
  • Do NOT go over, under, or through the yellow
    lines.
  • Do NOT pick up the Guns until told to.
  • Do NOT shoot until told to begin.
  • Stop shooting if CEASE FIRE is heard.
  • Always keep the guns pointed downrange.
  • NO running or horseplay on the range.

14
BB Gun Range Control
  • Only shooters and adult helpers are allowed
inside the yellow tape (on the range.)
  • Non-shooters wait outside the range.
Non-shooters should not interact with the
    shooters.
  • No shooters in the shooting boxes while anyone is
    down range.
  • The Range Officer controls all entrances.
  • Count the boys in, count them out.

15
Safety Rules - Safe Gun Handling
  • The golden rule of gun safety Always point the
muzzle in a safe direction - generally this is
    up, and downrange.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you are
ready to shoot keep it on the trigger guard
    instead.
  • Know how a gun (BB or other) operates before you
    use it.
  • Keep the bolt open and the gun unloaded until you
    are ready to use it.
  • Always keep the safety on until ready to fire.

16
Safety Rules - Safe Gun Handling
  • Never store a gun of any kind loaded.
  • Do not handle any gun while under the influence
    of drugs or alcohol.
  • Use guns with respect - for yourself, for others,
and for everyones property. ALL guns can be
    dangerous.
  • Do not use unsafe ammunition
  • For BB Guns, this means do not shoot used BBs.
A fired BB is slightly flattened and may damage
the gun through uneven wear and elevated chamber
    pressures.
