2Emergence of wireless broadband
- WiFi dense cellular mesh technology enables the
implementation of metropolitan wireless broadband
networks that provide business and public access
to wireless broadband Internet service throughout
a geographic coverage area similar to the digital
mobile phone service that is provided today. - Today, you can find a wireless hot spot in most
hotels, airports, book stores and coffee shops.
Seamless broadband wireless Internet services
will be widely available by the end of 2005.
Over 200 governments today are looking at
implementing some form of WiFi broadband
technology. - The problem with the current WiFi hot spot
implementation vs a metro-scale WiFi is a
wireless user must either find a free wireless
hot spot or pay at each establishment they go to.

5Metro-Scale WiFi a Transformative Technology
- Easier, less cost entry for small to mid-size
businesses to high speed data access can spur
economic development - Access to lower cost connectivity for
disadvantaged individuals and small businesses
can help eliminate the digital divide - Access to metro-scale network makes communication
between school, teacher, student and parent in
the home a reality - Ubiquitous access can make university campus
access available to non-resident students - Citywide/countywide access can reduce the cost of
service delivery for Government - Tourist destination sites around the world are
vying to be identified as the Wireless City
that allows you to always be connected - Metro scale continuous networks will allow
travelers, business people and residents to roam
seamlessly throughout the City for free or with
one single payment for month, week or day
