Houston ISD Millionaire Club Summer Reading
Program

What is it?
A coordinated effort by Library Services, the
Literacy Leads the Way initiative and the Reading
Department. Our goal is to keep HISD students
reading over the summer months.

Why are we doing it?
  • To foster a love of reading in our students
  • To help students enter school in the fall
    reading at or above the level they were reading
    in the beginning of the summer
  • If all students read five books this summer
    HISD students will have read 1 million books!!

How does it work?
  • Campus completes Summer Reading Campus
    Commitment form to be eligible for prizes in the
    fall
  • The Commitment form describes the campus plan
    for demonstrating and confirming that summer
    reading occurred over the summer
  • Students should select and read a minimum of 5
    books over the summer months, fill out the
    reading log, return it in the fall to be eligible
    for prizes

What do I do?
Principal
  • Complete and return the Summer Reading
    Commitment form and share the plan with faculty.
  • Designate your librarian or other campus
    personnel to be the Reading Program Manager.
  • Reinforce the importance of summer reading by
    displaying the Millionaire Club banner.
  • In the fall, make plans to celebrate reading on
    your campus!

What do I do?
Summer Reading Club Coordinators
  • Look at Millionaire Club materials consider
    ideas for summer reading themes and activities
    (like grade-wide reads, Read Around the World)
  • Print and distribute Reading Logs to students
    and send parent brochure home with students
  • In the fall, collect logs and be ready to report
    participation information, as outlined in your
    Campus Commitment Form
  • Distribute prizes and rewards to qualifying
    students

Teachers
  • Discuss the importance of summer reading with
    your students
  • Use the recommended reading lists to help
    students select books that match their reading
    level
  • In the fall, use the sample activities as
    accountability tools to verify that your students
    have accomplished their summer reading goals.

What do I do?
Librarians
  • Make use of your library catalog to help
    students search for books and make saved lists of
    books they are interested in reading this summer
  • Use lexiled lists to help students select
    appropriate books
  • Provide information on summer reading programs
    in public and local libraries
  • Schedule presentations by neighborhood
    librarians to promote summer reading programs

Parents and families
  • Encourage and promote reading in your home.
  • Find time to go to the library or local
    bookstore
  • Express interest in reading have books around
    your house. read along with or to your child
  • Celebrate reading accomplishments in your
    family.. find a special treat for your child when
    he completes the 5 book challenge.

When does it all happen?
  • Week of May 1, 2010 - Display Millionaire Club
    Banner  Receive Millionaire Club certificates
    and flyers for distribution to each student.  
  • May 10, 2010 - Librarians will attend Millionaire
    Club information meeting at Doris Miller Center.
  • May 14, 2010 - Host Countdown to Summer Reading
    Day
  • May 17, 2010 - Submit Millionaire Club Summer
    Reading Campus Commitment form. 
  • June August 2010 Students read!!

When does it all happen?
  • June 2010  - August 2010    Families will
    receive 3 HISD automated phone messages (1 each
    month) for parents and students to remind them
    about summer reading.
  • September 27, 2010 - Submit Millionaire Club
    data.
