3What is PoE
- Power over Ethernet is a mechanism for supplying
power to network devices over the same cabling
used to carry network traffic. PoE allows devices
that require power (PD) and supply the power
(PSE) over existing infrastructure without
needing to upgrade it. - This feature can simplify network installation
and maintenance by using the switch as a central
power source for other network devices.
4What is PoE - 802.3af Standard in Brief
- 802.3af, also known as Power over Ethernet,
defines a way to build Ethernet power-sourcing
equipment and powered terminals. - The specification involves delivering 48 volts of
DC power over unshielded twisted-pair wiring. - It works with existing cable plant, including
Category 3, 5, 5e or 6. - The technology supports a point-to-multipoint
power distribution architecture, parallel to the
data network. - The total amount of continuous power that can be
delivered to each node is 12.95 watts. (max. load
power 15.4W, after counting cable lost left
12.95W) - 802.3af power sourcing equipment contains a
detection mechanism to prevent sending power to
noncompliant devices.
5What is PoE What is PSE
- PSE Power Sourcing Equipment
- The PSE is the equipment that provides power to
PDs. The PSEs main functions are - To search the link section for a PD.
- Optionally classify the PD.
- Supply power to the link section. (only if a PD
is detected) - Monitor the power on the link section.
- 802.3af defines two types of power source
equipment Endpoint and Mid-span. - Endpoint refers to an Ethernet switch with
embedded Power over Ethernet technology. - Midspan devices are usually placed between legacy
switches and the powered devices.
With PoE injector built-in, EDs PoE switch
products are perfect solution for Endpoint
applications.

7What is PoE What is PD
- PD Powered Device
- A PD is a device that is either drawing power or
requesting power from PSE. - The Power Class of PD
- Once a PD is discovered, a PSE may optionally
perform PD classification by applying a DC
voltage and current to the port, allocated power
is subtracted from total power budget. - Any unclassified PD is considered to be a class 0
device. - Class 3 is similar to Class 0 in that it also
requests full power, but a Class 3 PD will always
draw at least 7W according to the standard,
whereas a Class 0 device could draw anything up
to full power

- Maximum Power Available Displays the maximum
power supply in watts. - Actual Power Consumption This column shows the
real-time total power consumption - System Power Limit User can modify the value to
this column field to limit the total output power
for the system - Main Supply Voltage This column shows the output
voltage of the system for PoE ports - Firmware Version This column shows the PoE
chips firmware version - Port Knockoff Disabled Power Management state
where one or more PDs have been powered down so
that a higher priority PD may be powered up and
yet not exceed the maximum total power available
for PDs - AC Disconnect Tick this checkbox to monitor the
AC impedance on the port terminals and removes
power when the impedance rises above a certain
value, for a certain period - Capacitive Detection If the port and capacitive
detection are enabled, the capacitances state
reads in the voltage result from the constant
current. This is then subtracted from the
pre-capacitance voltage to get a charge rate. If
this charge rate is within the window of the PD
signatures, the device is considered to be
discovered. - Start Showing with a tick symbol, the system
initializes and resets successfully

- Enable State Check it to enable the PoE function
to the port. - Power Limit From Classification Check it to
decide the power limit method when this check
box is ticked, the system will limit the power
supply to the powered device in accordance with
the related class - Legacy Check it to support the legacy power
devices. (PDs may not have IEEE802.3 standard
detection signature) - Priority Pull down the selection menu item to
choose the priority of power supplying. - Port Limit (lt15400) mW User can key in the power
limit value which is under 15.4 Watts. - Mode Displays the operating mode of the port.
- Current (mA) Displays the operating current of
the port. - Voltage (V) Displays the operating voltage of
the port. - Power (mW) Displays the power consumption of the
port. - Determined Class Displays the PDs class.

20PoE Technology In The FutureIEEE802.3at (PoE)
- The enhancement of the PoE is to increase the
amount of power that can be supplied from PSE to
the PDs, via the Cat-5, Cat-5e, Cat-6 unshielded
twisted pair wiring. - The new specification attempts to bring the power
supplied up to at least 24 watts. (draft 3.0
proposed 30W in draft 2.0) - New standard may have approve by year 2009 with
the enhancement mentioned above. - With new standard apply there will have more PD
available for PoE applications, eg Security IP
Camera with pan/tilt/zoom capabilities, door
controllers, POS terminals, videophones and
dual-band wireless access points.etc.
