10Going to the theatre and socializing in clubs
were also big parts of French middle class
society. Toulouse Lautrec (pronounced Tahloos
Lahtrek), Impressionist painter and printer,
captures a moment at a Table at the Moulin Rouge.
11Women Impressionists were also interested in
painting atmospheric conditions the atmosphere
of everyday family life, especially mothers and
their children. This painting by Berthe Morisot
(pronounced Bayrt Moreeso) shows a peaceful
moment for the mother.
12Mary Cassatt was an American artist living in
France. She was a close friend of Edgar Degas.
Her paintings show everyday family life indoors.
Although she didnt have any children of her own,
the subject of most of her paintings is
mother-and-child and her paintings contain many
patterns that could be found in middle class
French homes.
13Men also showed family life of the French middle
class, as in Country Footpath in the Summer by
Auguste Renoir (pronounced Ahgoost Renwah).
Notice how the atmospheric feeling of warm
sunshine is created with bright yellows and there
is little detail in the figures.

- loose brushstrokes
- atmospheric conditions, often colors of vivid
light - a captured moment of the leisure activities of
