Drying in the sun takes out the bitterness.
From Pod to Bean
Scoop out the white pulp and pale beans.
Spread the beans and pulp on banana leaves.
Split the ripe pod open.
Cover everything with more banana leaves.

Conch
You can hear the sea if you hold the shell to
your ear.
Mama steams the conch and picks out the meat

Trading in Santo Domingo

a better chance to trade for what they want.
Ice and cloth are traded for cocoa beans, bananas
and coconuts.
The girls trade a conch shell and a balsam bag
through Uncle Jacob.

Ice Harvesting
If it snows, the ice wont freeze, so holes are
tapped in the ice.
After the river freezes, the ice is first grooved
with a cutter.
The ice is then cut and put in the icehouse.
Trading the Ice
The ice is loaded into the schooner.
The ice is covered with sawdust and hay so it
wont melt.
