Alice Sebold

Alice Sebold was raised in suburban Pennsylvania
and went to college at Syracuse University in New
York. At the end of her freshman year she was
raped and this experience became the basis for
her first novel, Lucky. After her rape she moved
back home for the summer and returned in the fall
to finish her schooling. After graduating
Syracuse, she started graduate school at the
University of Houston hoping to obtain a MA in
poetry. Unfortunately for Alice, Houston was not
for her and she dropped out and moved to the East
Village in NY. In NY she got a job teaching at
Hunter College. During that time she wrote an
article for The New York Times, describing her
rape. Her students who hadnt read the article
soon saw her on Oprah.
During this same time, Sebold was falling deeper
and deeper into heroin addiction. Eventually,
after the thought of AIDS and her junkie
boyfriend being beat up over a score, she
realized it was time to quit. She broke up with
her boyfriend and took the first opportunity she
got to get out of NY. She then spent two months
at the Dorland Mountain Arts Colony. After her
two months there, Sebold moved back to NY, but to
106th ST, away from her old neighborhood. One
night, while her boyfriend was at work, Sebold
blew a fuse and went to the basement to fix it.
Down there she heard the sounds of a woman being
told to Fuck me, bitch. For the first time,
Sebold felt scared, and her fear made her
decision to move back to California, to the
Artist colony. She finally finished her MFA
degree at the University of California, Irvine in
1998. During her time at UCI, Sebold met her
husband and fellow author, Glen David Gold.
Sebold now lives in California with her husband,
writing and going on tour for her books.
