We need to do a better job teaching financial
smarts to todays kidsThis bill (the Youth
Financial Education Act) will give our teachers
and schools extra resources and encourage them to
teach financial literacy to kids. (Congressman
David Dreier, R-CA, Chairman of the House Rules
Committee)
8
H.R. 2871, The Youth Financial Education
Act(would) help improve the financial literacy
of our youth by authorizing grants to states of
at least 500,000 to carry out financial
education programs in elementary and secondary
schools. (Dollars Sense)
9
States need to recognize that high school is the
appropriate time and place to provide young
adults with meaningful instruction in personal
finance, and they must mandate the inclusion of
highly interactive, creative and applied courses
in personal finance within their high school
curriculum standards. (Dr. Lewis
Mandell, Dean, School of Management, University
of Buffalo
10
Organizations that already work with high school
students, such as the Securities Industry
Foundation for Economics Education, Junior
Achievement, and the National Council on Economic
Education, should be encouraged to develop
curricula that facilitates sound basic financial
decision making that is relevant to young adults.
(Dr. Lewis Mandell, Dean, School of Management,
University of Buffalo)
11
Students can take courses in Multi-variable
Calculus and Advanced Placement Physics, but
personal money management has been mostly ignored
by the nations high schools.
(Lincoln Mayer, Sidwell Friends High School.
Winning essay from Capital Ones Easy Money
Essay Contest.)
12
Beginning with basic financial skills, like
balancing a checkbook and moving on to advanced
financial management concepts, such as asset
allocation and risk management, students would
take a walk through the financial world one step
at a time. (Lincoln Mayer, Sidwell Friends High

Money Essay Contest.)

Speech/Voice Recognition
  • Voice technology is now a reality, and training

    formatting, computer applications, and vocational
    business courses.
  • Students will need fundamental training on the
keyboard and with voice recognition before using
the computer, and it must be taught by a teacher
    who is qualified.
  • Permanent hand injuries when young people start
keyboarding at early ages. Health concern among
    young people.

23
Speech/Voice Recognition
  • The Big Three products are now so good and
Microsoft is working so hard to support speech
recognition for Windows and MS Office, that is is
hard for me to believe that anyone in education
isnt seriously planning to teach speech! (Kark
    Barksdale)
  • Voice Xpress, Naturally Speaking, ViaVoice

24
Speech/Voice Recognition
  • A former top executive at Novell Corp. told me
last week that speech recognition is the NEXT
WAVE in computer software. (Karl Barksdale)

and to lead our profession into this new and
    exciting paradigm. (Karl Barksdale)

    past decade
  • E-commerce growing to a multi-billion dollar
industry in about half that time
  • Projected 840,000 IT positions unfilled this year
    alone

27
Information Technology, cont.
  • IT is where its at in todays business world.
  • That translates quickly into where todays
students should be headed to garner the jobs and
opportunities of tomorrow. (Techniques, Oct. 2000)

28
Information Technology, cont.
  • In many cases, employers arent necessarily
looking for someone with a four-year college
degree in computer science. Often, theyre
looking for someone with the specific technical
    know-how provided by ..certification training.
    Carol
    DAmico, Community College of Indiana
