  • Actions to take upon hearing the fire alarm
  • Actions to take upon discovering a fire
  • How to control the spread of smoke and fire
  • Techniques for the evacuation of endangered
    occupants
  • Emergency evacuation procedures
  • Fire suppression techniques

The Fire Alarm System
  • The Fire Alarm is a TWO stage alarm the First
    Stage of the alarm consists of an alert /warning
    alarm (1 tone) and the Second Stage of the alarm
    is the evacuation alarm (3 tone)
  • Upon hearing evacuation alarm, exit building
    immediately
  • There is no overhead paging system

Upon Hearing the Fire Alarm
  • Check your area for smoke conditions
  • Close all doors
  • Prepare important items for evacuation, eg. coat,
    car keys, wallet
  • Follow your Code Captains instructions

Upon Hearing the Fire Alarm
  • Staff attending meetings will accompany DBCVSRI
    staff
  • Confine compartmental movement to a minimum
  • Stay put unless you hear the evacuation alarm
  • Stand by and await instructions from Code
    Captains

Upon Discovering a FireREACT
  • R emove persons in immediate danger if possible
  • E nsure ALL departmental doors are closed
  • A activate the fire alarm system using the
    nearest pull station
  • C all 9-911 and report Fire and give the exact
    location
  • T ry to extinguish the fire or concentration on
    further evacuation

SMOKE
  • Extremely Toxic
  • Spreads Rapidly
  • Displaces Oxygen
  • People Become
  • disoriented
  • impaired
  • blinded
  • confused

Smell of Smoke
  • Call ext. 40300 and report all unidentifiable and
    untraceable smells of smoke
  • If you discover visible smoke or flame this is a
    fire
  • REACT promptly

ACTIVATE THE FIRE ALARM
  • Pull the fire alarm
  • If the alarm does not activate, go to the next
    fire alarm pull and pull that one
  • Most important, get the fire alarm activated

When the Fire Alarm System Activates
  • Locking devices on exit doors release
    automatically
  • Air handling systems shut down to control smoke
    movement
  • A signal is sent to the Fire Department and
    Onsite Fire Response Team

PEOPLE FIRESStop, Drop and Roll
  • If you wear glasses, take them off your face
  • Cover your face with your hands (if possible)
  • If you are on fire, stop, drop and roll, OTHERS
    should extinguish fire with blanket and cool
    person with water

The Fire Triangle
  • All three elements are needed to start a fire.
    To extinguish a fire, one side must be removed.

Types of Fuel
  • Regular Flammables paper, wood
  • Liquid Flammables Gasoline, paint
    thinner
  • Electrical Anything that is plugged
    in
  • Metals Potassium, sodium.
    Typically found in a lab setting.

Types of Extinguishers
  • Three main types
  • Water (APW) Class A fires only

CO2 Class B and C fires only
Dry Chemical - For ABC or BC fires
D class extinguishers are typically specific to
the fuel

EVACUATION- CODE GREEN
  • Leave the building immediately! Shut your office
    door and take car keys and wallet if possible.
    Follow Emergency Evacuation Procedures
  • Follow Code Captains Instructions identified by a
    bright orange vest. Follow their direction and
    report any pertinent information. Meet at
    identified evacuation area and report to your
    Code Captain.
  • Evacuation location Birge Street
  • Re-Entry is authorized by the Fire Department
    only and you will hear 3 horn blasts sounding
    the all clear and re-entry to the building may
    proceed.
