Welcome to Greenwood Wesleyan Church. Please
standby for the following announcements.
11
On Sunday, May 9, we will have our annual meeting
of the Local Church Conference, immediately
following the AM service. During that time, we
will elect officers for the following year.
Covenant and community members are eligible to
vote.
12
I need to speak to all members of the nominating
committee after church.
13
We have decided to make a major change to our
lineup of services. We are suspending Wednesday
night church indefinitely. In the coming weeks,
we will begin a transition from a formal service
to flexible and more intimate small group
meetings to try to facilitate a diverse set of
needs in our church.
14
We could use more help with lawn care. If you
are interested in helping out, please sign up or
see Tony. The more people we have, the less
frequently people have to cut.
15
Some tweaks to the website www.greenwoodwesleyan.c
omhave been made. It is now possible to download
sermons, bulletins, and PowerPoint presentations,
as well as check out the latest photos from our
India trip
16
A new Facebook page, titled Friends of Greenwood
Wesleyan Church has been created. It is a
webpage that can be seen or edited by anybody.
Send a request to join the page, and you can post
prayer requests, photos, or anything you want.
17
I need to speak briefly to the LBA after church.

Psalm 46
  • 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present
help in trouble.  2 Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth give way and the mountains fall
into the heart of the sea,3 though its waters
roar and foam and the mountains quake with their
    surging.

20
Psalm 46
  •  4 There is a river whose streams make glad the
city of God, the holy place where the Most High
dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall
God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are
in uproar, kingdoms fall he lifts his voice, the
    earth melts.

21
Psalm 46
  • 7 The LORD Almighty is with us the God of Jacob
is our fortress.  8 Come and see the works of the
LORD, the desolations he has brought on the
earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the
earth he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields with fire.

22
Psalm 46
  • 10 "Be still, and know that I am God I will be
exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in
    the earth."
  •  11 The LORD Almighty is with us the God of
    Jacob is our fortress.

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
43
When I survey the wondrous cross,On which the
Prince of glory died,My richest gain I count
but loss,And pour contempt on all my pride.
44
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,Save in the
death of Christ, my GodAll the vain things
that charm me most,I sacrifice them to His blood
45
See, from His head, His hands, His feet,Sorrow
and love flow mingled downDid ere such love
and sorrow meet,Or thorns compose so rich a
crown?
46
Were the whole realm of nature mine,That were a
present far too smallLove so amazing, so
divine,Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Todays Message1 Corinthians 1212-31Milestone
2You Like Chopping Firewood
57
Fire! Fire! Fire!
  • Men have on thing in common were pyros!
  • People can do really dumb things with fireworks.
  • Its hard to burn something when there isnt
    something physically present to burn.
  • Its hard for the Holy Spirit to move when
theres no place for Him to work.

58
1 Corinthians 1212-31
  • 12The body is a unit, though it is made up of
many parts and though all its parts are many,
they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13For
we were all baptized bya one Spirit into one
bodywhether Jews or Greeks, slave or freeand we
were all given the one Spirit to drink.

59
1 Corinthians 1212-31
  • 14Now the body is not made up of one part but of
many. 15If the foot should say, "Because I am not
a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would
not for that reason cease to be part of the body.
16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an
eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not
for that reason cease to be part of the body.

60
1 Corinthians 1212-31
  • 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the
sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an
ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in
fact God has arranged the parts in the body,
every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.
19If they were all one part, where would the body
    be?

61
1 Corinthians 1212-31
  • 20As it is, there are many parts, but one
body. 21The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't
need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet,
"I don't need you!" 22On the contrary, those
parts of the body that seem to be weaker are
indispensable, 23and the parts that we think are
less honorable we treat with special honor.

62
1 Corinthians 1212-31
  • And the parts that are unpresentable are treated
with special modesty, 24while our presentable
parts need no special treatment. But God has
combined the members of the body and has given
greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so
that there should be no division in the body, but
that its parts should have equal concern for each
    other.

63
1 Corinthians 1212-31
  • 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with
it if one part is honored, every part rejoices
with it.  27Now you are the body of Christ, and
each one of you is a part of it.

64
1 Corinthians 1212-31
  • 8And in the church God has appointed first of all
apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then
workers of miracles, also those having gifts of
healing, those able to help others, those with
gifts of administration, and those speaking in
    different kinds of tongues.

65
1 Corinthians 1212-31
  • 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all
teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have
gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all
interpret? 31But eagerly desire the greater
gifts. And now I will show you the most
    excellent way

66
This Series
  • There are markers on the road to let you know
    where you are.
  • This series is designed to help you gauge where
    you are in your faith.
  • Last week You put your virtue on display to
    give God glory.
  • This week You create a unity in the church.

67
Zooming Out
  • A keen observer will notice that this passage
    said nothing of fire.
  • This is about unity.
  • We have to understand how this passage fits
    Pauls overall idea.
  • The church was stifled by divisions.
  • There were behaviors that foiled a genuine moving
    of the Spirit.
  • The behavior here was creating disunity.

68
This Instance
  • There are many issues that divided the
    Corinthians.
  • In this context, the disagreement is over how
    bestows gifts.
  • Some gifts were treated with more respect than
    others.
  • People were put in places of honor based on what
    they could do.

69
Pauls Argument
  • There is one God in whose name you were baptized.
  • There is one Spirit who gives gifts as He
    chooses.
  • All people of God belong to one body and serve
unique, specific functions within that body.
  • All people within the body have essential value
bestowed upon them by God, and thus, are of equal
    importance.

70
Point 5
  • Therefore, only when the entire body is
functioning as one unit can it ever truly thrive!

71
What Paul Knew
  • We are so much more effective when we are
    unified.
  • Ever hear the phrase opposites attract?
  • When you work together in your marriage, thats
    when you thrive.
  • The church is more complex, but the premise is
    still the same.

72
Last Sunday Night
  • We discussed Scripture in our study.
  • Rarely in Scripture is the singular you used.
    Its almost always plural.
  • Preachers dont preach for one person, but
    rather, the whole church.
  • We discussed the last time the Spirit really
moved in the church. Nobody could remember!

73
(No Transcript)
74
Preachers Facepalm
  • What this says is that Gods Spirit isnt moving
in a place where it should overflow.
  • We know that God is still bestowing gifts upon
    us.
  • We know that God is present!
  • He is trying to light sparks all over the place!
Theres not really anything to catch it.

75
Gods Firewood
  • The firewood that God uses is the firewood of
    unity.
  • Weve talked in the past about the four-fold
    vision for the church.
  • It takes all of us to pull it off.
  • Perhaps, then, we need to learn what body part we
    are.

76
Roles
  • My role is to explain what God is saying to the
    church.
  • Im here to help you understand the vision.
  • The entire church then comes up with ways to
    protect and grow the vision.
  • You role then becomes to use your passions and
gifts in a way that will help execute the vision.

77
Finishing Thoughts
  • When the church starts acting on its vision,
    youll see God move.
  • The church must first come together in unity.
  • Start by volunteering for projects we have.
Follow up with your passions, gifts, and ideas.
  • Gods here with a lighter in His hand!
