2- Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (September 29,1547
April 23, 1616), was a Spanish novelist, poet and
playwright.
3Cervantes background
Cervantes started his literary career in
Andalusia in 1580. According to Cervantes, he
wrote 20-30 plays, but only two copies have
survived. He is best known for his novel Don
Quixote de La Mancha, which is considered by many
to be the first modern novel, one of the greatest
works in western literature, and the greatest in
the Spanish language. It is one of the
Encyclopedia Britannica's Great books of the
western world" and the Russian author Fyodor
Dostoyevsky called it "the ultimate and most
sublime word of human thinking". Cervantes is so
well regarded that his face is depicted on most
Spanish Euro coins, and his image is common in
Spanish book stores. Israeli Prime Minister David
Ben Gurion learned the Spanish language so that
he could read it in the original, considering it
a prerequisite to becoming an effective
statesman.
4Don Quixote
- Don Quixote chronicles the famous adventures
of the noble wandering knight Don Quixote de La
Mancha and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, as
they travel through sixteenth-century Spain.
Considered one of the true classics of world
literature, DON QUIXOTE details Don Quixotes
imaginary windmill-tilting travels to solve the
world's ills.
