Great in 331 B.C. and became the capital of an
enormous empire.

Alexandria - Alexandria stands at the crossroads of the main

5Ancient Alexandria Library
- Alexandria Library became a major center of
Science, Philosophy and Art. - It has been estimated that at one time the
Library of Alexandria held over 500,000 documents
from Assyria, Greece, Persia, Egypt, India, and
Italy and other nearby countries - The 500,000 volumes were not codices but scrolls,
made of papyrus and written by hand.

- The Ancient Library was the first universal
library in history. It also became a research
institute and museum. - Over 100 scholars lived near the library to
perform research, write and lecture or translate
and copy documents.

- There were 13 Lecture Halls and the grounds could
house up to 5,000 students.

- The Modern Library of Alexandria is a revival
of the Ancient Great Library of Alexandria - The Library of Alexandria was inaugurated in 2003
near the site of the ancient library.

- The Main Reading Room is among the greatest open
reading halls in the world. - The Modern Alexandria Library can hold up to a
million books. - The Entire collection, printed and non-printed is
accessible through the online catalog.

- The Museum houses a special collection consisting
of the artifacts discovered at the site of the
Library.

- Islamic - The lantern was an means of lighting
and had Islamic symbolic meaning attached to the
object. - Greek - Bust of Socrates (469399 BC),
well-known Greek philosopher, who represents the
peak of Greek philosophical thought. - Egyptian - Portion of a wall of a tomb, on
which is represented in high relief the deceased
sitting.

- It can be expected that the new Library of
Alexandria will bear a legacy that will reach as
far into the future as its predecessor has
provided to the past. An institution whose
influence may span from the time of Alexander the
Great, more than 2,300 years ago, to - the present and beyond.
