Born of a virgin

• Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.
  Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
  and shall call his name Immanuel.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this
way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to
Joseph, before they came together she was found
to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 22 All
this took place to fulfill what the Lord had
spoken by the prophet 23 Behold, the virgin
shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall
call his name Immanuel(which means, God with
us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as
the angel of the Lord commanded him he took his
wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given
birth to a son.. Matthew 121-25

Born in Bethlehem

• But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too
  little to be among the clans of Judah, from you
  shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in
  Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from
  ancient days.

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in
the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from
the east came to Jerusalem, Matthew 21
and assembling all the chief priests and scribes
of the people, he inquired of them where the
Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, In
Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the
prophet Matthew 24-5

Preceded by a messenger

• A voice cries In the wilderness prepare the way
  of the Lord make straight in the desert a
  highway for our God.
• Isaiah 403

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in
the wilderness of Judea, 2 Repent, for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he
who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he
said, The voice of one crying in the wilderness

Enter Jerusalem on a colt

• Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout
  aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king
  is coming to you righteous and having salvation
  is he humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt,
  the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 99

When he drew near to Olivet, he sent two of the
disciples, 30 saying, Go into the village in
front of you, where on entering you will find a
colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat.
Untie it and bring it here. 35 And they brought
it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the
colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode
along, they spread their cloaks on the road.
37 As he was drawing nearalready on the way down
the Mount of Olivesthe whole multitude of his
disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a
loud voice for all the mighty works that they had

Sold for thirty pieces of silver

• Then I said to them, If it seems good to you,
  give me my wages but if not, keep them. And
  they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of
  silver. 13 Then the Lord said to me, Throw it to
  the potter - the lordly price at which I was
  priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of
  silver and threw them into the house of the Lord,
  to the potter. Zechariah 1112

and said, What will you give me if I deliver
him over to you? And they paid him thirty pieces
of silver. Matthew 2615 And
throwing down the pieces of silver into the
temple, he departed, and he went and hanged
himself. 6 But the chief priests, took counsel
and bought with them the potter's field as a
burial place for strangers.

Gall and vinegar offered to him
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now
finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I
thirst. John 1928
34 they offered him
wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he
tasted it, he would not drink it.

jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a
sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch
and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had
received the sour wine, he said, It is

Bones not broken
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was
already dead, they did not break his legs. John
1933

• 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
  but the Lord delivers him out of them all. 20 He
  keeps all his bones not one of them is broken.

He would be pierced
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a
spear, and at once there came out blood and
water. John 1934

• And I will pour out on the house of David and
  the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace
  and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on
  me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall
  mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child,
  and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a
  firstborn. Zech. 1210

Psalm 22- pointing them to the Psalm
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a
loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?
that is, My God, my God, why have you forsaken

Psalm 22- scorned by men
And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers
scoffed at him, saying, He saved others let him
save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his
Chosen One! 36 The soldiers also mocked him,
coming up and offering him sour wine 37 and
saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save
yourself! 38 There was also an inscription over
him, This is the King of the Jews.39 One of the
criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying,
Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and

• v. 6-7, But I am a worm and not a man, scorned
  by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who

But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a

• v. 14,  I am poured out like water, and all my
  bones are out of joint my heart is like wax it
  is melted within my breast

Psalm 22- thirsts in his death
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now
finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I

• v. 15, my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
  and my tongue sticks to my jaws you lay me in

Psalm 22- garments divided, lots cast
23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they
took his garments and divided them into four
parts, one part for each soldier also his
tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one
piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one
another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for
it to see whose it shall be. This was to fulfill
the Scripture which says,They divided my
garments among them, and for my clothing they
cast lots. John 1923-24

Isaiah 53 - the man of sorrows
And he began to teach them that the Son of Man
must suffer many things and be rejected by the
elders and the chief priests and the scribes and
be killed Mk. 831 Then he said to them, My
soul is very sorrowful, even to death Mt.
2638 And those who passed by derided him,
wagging their heads  So also the chief priests,
with the scribes and elders, mocked him, 44 And
the robbers who were crucified with him also
reviled him Mt. 2739-44

• v. 3, He was despised and rejected by men a man
  of sorrows, and acquainted with grief  and as
  one from whom men hide their faces he was
  despised, and we esteemed him not.

Isaiah 53 - would be wounded for us
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was
already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But
one of the soldiers pierced his side with a
spear, and at once there came out blood and
water. 35 He who saw it has borne witnesshis
testimony is true, and he knows that he is
telling the truththat you also may believe. John
1933-35

• v. 5, But he was wounded for our transgressions
  he was crushed for our iniquities upon him was
  the chastisement that brought us peace, and with
  his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53 - would pay a price for us
28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom
for many. Matthew 2028

• v. 6, All we like sheep have gone astray we
  have turned every one to his own way and the
  Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 53 - would make no defense
But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest
said to him, I adjure you by the living God,
tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of
God. Matthew 2663

• v. 7, He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
  yet he opened not his mouth like a lamb that is
  led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that
  before its shearers is silent, so he opened not
  his mouth.

Isaiah 53 - stricken for our sins
For I delivered to you as of first importance
what I also received that Christ died for our
sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 1
Corinthians 153

• v. 8, By oppression and judgment he was taken
  away and as for his generation, who considered
  that he was cut off out of the land of the
  living, stricken for the transgression of my
  people?

Isaiah 53 - assigned a grave with the rich
When it was evening, there came a rich man from
Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple
of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the
body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given
to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped
it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his
own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And
he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the
tomb and went away. Matthew 2757-60

• v. 9, And they made his grave with the wicked
  and with a rich man in his death, although he had
  done no violence, and there was no deceit in his
  mouth.

Isaiah 53 - would intercede for transgress.

• v. 12, He poured out his soul to death and was
  numbered with the transgressorsyet he bore the
  sin of many, and makes intercession for the
  transgressors.

 And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they
know not what they do. And they cast lots to
divide his garments. Luke 2334

Objections to be Considered

• Could it have been a coincidence?
• Could the gospel have been altered?
• Could they have been intentionally fulfilled?
• Could Christians be misusing prophetic texts?

• Concerning this salvation, the prophets who
  prophesied about the grace that was to be yours
  searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring
  what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them
  was indicating when he predicted the sufferings
  of Christ and the subsequent glories.
  1 Peter 110-11
•  knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of
  Scripture comes from someone's own
  interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever
  produced by the will of man, but men spoke from
  God as they were carried along by the Holy
  Spirit. 2 Peter 120-21
