Enders Shadow
Orson Scott Card
  • Presented by

2
Summary
  • In the book Enders Shadow, you find out a
different view of Enders Game. Meet Bean, a boy
on the streets of Rotterdam. He has superior
intelligence to the regular children in the same
    harsh environment.
  • His supreme intelligence is not easily
surpassed, creating enemies and allies. Here on
Earth, he meets Sister Carlotta, a nun with an
eye for keen children and constructive strategies.

3
Summary Cont.
She is apart of the International Fleet,
recruiting any children with extraordinary mind
works. The kids that are recruited are sent to
Battleschool, located in space. This is where
the training begins to fight against the Buggers
an alien race that had previously tried to
destroy the human race two times before. Bean is
one of the chosen view with the ability to help
save the world under a great leader, Ender
Wiggin, who actually is an older version of
Bean. A group is formed and teams up to ready
for another Bugger invasion.

4
Main Characters
  • Bean-A young boy, 4 years, genius off the streets
of Rotterdam. After his potential is
discovered,he is sent to Battleschool in space.
  • Achillies- An acquaintance of Beans, he is an
older boy, 10 years, and a cripple. He kills
    anyone that sees his weaknesses.
  • Sister Carlotta-A middle aged nun that works for
the International Fleet, finding recruits for
    Battleschool.
  • Ender Wiggin-A boy slightly older than Bean. He
is recognized as a great commander and teaches
    Bean many strategies for battle.

5
Bean
  • At the beginning of the story, Bean is 4 years
old, at the end, 8 years.
  • Bean is a small boy for his age. In the
beginning of the book, he is on the brink of
dying and very frail. By the end, he is strong
and healthy from his time at Battleschool.

6
Bean Cont.
The problem is that we shouldnt have the
board at all. Were not each others enemies.
The Buggers are the only enemy. Were supposed
to be the allies. We should be learning from
each other, sharing information and ideas. We
should feel free to experiment, trying new things
without being afraid of how it will affect our
standings. That board up there, thats the
teachers game, getting us to turn against each
other (363)

Achillies. Thats the one he needed to kill.
And if Achillies had been there at that moment,
Bean would have tried. Might have succeeded,
too, if violent rage and desperate shame were
enough to beat down any advantage of size and
experience Achillies had. And if Achillies
killed Bean anyway, it was no worse than Bean
deserved, for having failed Ender Wiggin so
completely. (335) -Narrator
7
Bean Cont.
  • Bean is an extraordinary boy with a great
potential. He figures out a way to live on the
parlous streets, and make it out alive.
  • At Battleschool, he thinks of new tactics and
strategies, upholding a name as commander. He is
the one boy that is considered Enders Shadow.

8
Achillies
  • Achillies is 10 years, and 14 at the end.
  • Achillies is a crippled boy one of his feet is
disabled. His foot is fixed through surgery and
he is sent to Battleschool, where he brings up
    his health and strength.

9
Achillies Cont.
This line forms up when its still dark.
Its dangerous. Cant we have a light out here?
Ive got my children to think about, said
Achillies. Dont you want my little kids to be
safe? Or am I the only one who cares about
them? (26)
I told her to kill him. I told her he was
the wrong one. I saw it in his face, lying there
on the ground, that he would never forgive her.
But hes cold. He waited so long. But he never
took bread from her. That should have told her.
She shouldnt have gone off alone with him. He
began crying in earnest now. I think she was
protecting me. Because I told her to kill him
that first day. I think she was trying to get
him not to kill me. (52) -Bean
10
Achillies Cont.
  • Achillies is an older boy on the streets of
Rotterdam, considered a bully. He has a
disability with his foot, making him a crippled.
He meets Bean when a plan is made to have him as
    their protector.
  • He feels anyone that sees him as weak must die.
He needs control over everyone, and dislikes
    people above him.

11
Sister Carlotta
  • A middle age nun, probably around 30, at the
    end 34.
  • She is a tall woman, and in good health.

12
Carlotta Cont.
  • I know all I need to know for now, said
Sister Carlotta. Enough to know that this child
truly is a miracle, raised up be God for some
    great purpose. (74)
  • But sometimes she wielded her top security
clearance like a meat-ax, using it to get past
prison wardens and security officers, who saw her
unbelievable level of need-to-know and then, when
they checked to make sure her documents werent a
stupid forgery, were screamed at by officers so
high-ranked that it made them want to treat
    Sister Carlotta like God. (203)

13
Carlotta Cont.
  • Sister Carlotta is a nun that works for the
    International Fleet, looking for extraordinary
    children to train for battle.
  • She finds Bean and takes him off the street and
sends him to battle school. But now she wants to
find out more on the boy, and how he came to be.

14
Ender Wiggin
  • The beginning 8, at the end, 10 years.
  • Ender is a young boy in battle school, similar
to Bean. He is smaller then most of the other
older boys, but is still physically fit.

15
Ender Cont.
  • I dont care about their game anymore, Bean,
said Ender. Im not going to play it anymore.
No more practices. No more battles. They can
put their little slips of paper on the floor all
they want, but I wont go. I decided that before
I went through the door today. Thats why I had
you go for the gate. I didnt think it would
work, but I didnt care. I just wanted to go out
    in style. (353)
  • Youll win, Ender. We all know that. Crazy
Tom, he said, You mean Im suppose to figure out
how to beat Dragon Army? Everybody knows youre
    the best. -Bean (352)

16
Ender Cont.
  • Ender is considered an older version of Bean.
He is extremely smart and comes up with ways to
work around problems with excellent solutions.
  • It seems that he may be the best chance against
the Bugger army. As commander of Dragon Army, he
    teaches his followers well.

Literary Criticism
  • When I heard that Orson Scott Card was
returning to Ender's saga to retell the first
book from another point of view, I was skeptical.
However, upon reading Ender's Shadow I found that
I enjoyed Card's new treatment of the original
    story.

  • For me it was worth dipping again into the
same well, for the water was greatly changed this
time, and if it has not been turned exactly into
wine, at least it has a different flavor because
of the different vessel that it was carried in,
and I hope that you will enjoy it as much, or
    even more.

Recommendation
This book is interesting. I would recommend it
to ages 12 and up. It most likely would appeal
to people that enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy,
along with Action. It is the sequel of Enders
Game. You could read it without reading the
beginning book because it explains the other from
a different point of view. Most of it is from
the other book. The book begins at a good pace.
It slows down slightly when you get towards the
middle. But, overall, it was a well spread out.
