Title: THE VICTORIANS

THE VICTORIANS
1837 - 1901

QUEEN VICTORIA
Queen Victoria was born in 1819 at Kensington
Palace in London. Her full name as Alexandrina
Victoria. When she was only 18 her Uncle William
died so she was the next heir to the throne. She
was crowned in Westminster Abbey in 1838. She
then married her very handsome cousin from
Germany. Many people were angry at the queen for
marrying a foreigner but she ignored them and
had a very happy marriage. Sadly Prince Albert (
her husband ) died of typhoid at a young age.
Because of her loss she mourned greatly.

Children and School
In Victorian times children had a tough life.
Some went to a school and most of them worked. In
order to have shelter and maybe something to eat,
every body in poor families had to work. The
families that had a bit of money sent their
child/children to school. Back then there were
two types of schools. The Ragger school, which
was free and open to any one. And there was the
Dame school with in order to send your child
there you would have to pay a small fee. In
Victorian England over half of the children grew
up not knowing how to read or write. Although
some did go to a Sunday school or nanny. Life as
a child for upper class children was also tough
because you would have a governess for the day
teaching you things such as arithmetic and how to
act like a lady. Then you would be sent to bed.
You would hardly ever see your parents except for
meal times.

POOR FAMILIES
In the Victorian times being poor meant really
poor. People that had no money were not put into
a home or were given shelter. They simply had to
live in the streets. Women, children, even
pregnant and ill people were thrown out. There
were a lot of young children that had been on the
streets. A lot of the boys were put in a
workhouse. Sadly this was the only way orphans
could keep alive really. Masters of the workhouse
made life living hell for the children . Young
girls were made to work in mill houses and their
mothers , ( the father was rarely alive.) were
made to work in factories, sewing and working
machines. If they could afford it, some homeless
families could rent a room in a big house for a
week or so. It would cost them a shilling , now
approximately five pence, for a week.
5
Victorian Dress
In the Victorian times there was not really a
fashion for the average person. More upper class
peoples outfits varied from time to time but
there was no big change. For poor people the
dress code was really only rags or handmade
dresses that were made out of any material they
could find, including farm sacks. More posh
people tended to wear dark coloured petticoats
and thick shawls. It was also custom for
virtually everyone to wear some form of headwear.
For the less fortunate people it was a bonnet or
doily hat. And for the richer people it was a
more detailed bonnet or a wide rimmed hat.

Victorian Sports.
Sport became extremely popular during the
Victorian era. Traditional sports like football,
cricket, and boxing had been played for years
now, but there was no rules. So the Victorians
decided to make some up. In 1871 many football
teams were set up, like Aston Villa and Everton.
These new teams were created by the church to
attract more people to church. In cricket the
first test match played was between England and
Australia in England in 1880. The organised
matches drew big crowds and watching sport live
soon became a hobby.

Victorian Work
As the number of factories grew people from the
countryside began to move into the towns looking
for better paid work. The wages of a farm worker
were very low and there were less jobs working on
farms because of the invention and use of new
machines such as threshers. Also thousands of new
workers were needed to work machines in mills and
foundries and the factory owners built houses for
them. Cities filled to overflowing and London was
particularly bad. At the start of the 19th
Century about 1/5 of Britains population lived
there, but by 1851 half the population of the
country had set up home in London. London, like
most cities, was not prepared for this great
increase in people. People crowded into already
crowded houses. Rooms were rented to whole
families or perhaps several families. If there
was no rooms to rent, people stayed in lodging
houses.
