Title: RHIZANOVA™
1 RHIZANOVA
- Tree Transplant
- Tree Injectable
- Pt Injectable
- Flower and Palm Rx
2 Benefits of Mycorrhizae
- Root absorptive area increased
- greater area for nutrient uptake
- increased water absorption
- Fungi solubilize and mobilize nutrients
- phosphorous uptake enhanced
- otherwise, insoluble forms often unavailable to
plant - Improved fitness
- essential for nutritionally and/or moisture
deficient areas - healthy plant more able to grow, reproduce,
resist or tolerate diseases, drought stress, etc. - non-mycorrhizal plants usually dont survive
3Benefits of Mycorrhizae contd
- Mantles formed by EM provide physical barriers to
pathogens - Excreted metabolites improve soil structure
- by-product of solubilization of minerals
4Mycorrhizae increase root absorptive area
5Benefits of Mycorrhizae
6 Types of Mycorrhizae
- Ectomycorrhizae (Ecto)
- fungi grow between root cortical cells produce a
sheath (mantle) covering the root surface - on trees and shrubs
- all conifers, also oak, hickory, chestnut, birch,
beech, basswood, pecan, Eucalyptus - some fungi produce mushrooms, puffballs
- Pisolithus tinctorius (PT)
7Thelephoroid ectomycorrhizae on Douglas-fir
Yellowish fungal mantle covers roots
Ecto species
8Bisected puffball of Pisolithus tinctorius
9Types of Mycorrhizae contd
- Endomycorrhizae (sometimes called vesicular-
arbuscular mycorrhizae(VAM) - fungi grow within root cortical cells produce
arbuscules within cells, often vesicles - not all produce vesicles, but all produce
arbuscules - on deciduous trees and shrubs and herbaceous
plants - maple, sycamore, elm, etc. also flowers,
grasses, etc. - No above ground fungal structures
- Glomus spp.

14Mycorrhizal preferences
- Endomycorrhizae
- herbaceous plant species
- non-woody agricultural crops, turf, ornamentals
- Ectomycorrhizae
- Trees (particularly conifers), woody shrubs
- Both
- Trees and woody shrubs (particularly broad leaf)
15Mycorrhizal preferences
- Endomycorrhizae
- Acacia, Ash, Bay, Boxelder, Buckeye, Cedar,
Chokeberry, Cherry, Cottonwood, Crabapple,
Cypress, Dogwood, Elm, Ginkgo, Gum, Hackberry,
Hawthorn, Holly, Horsechestnut, Juniper,Locust,
Magnolia, Mesquite, Mimosa, Mulberry, Palm,
Persimmon, Poplar, Redbud, Redwood, Russian
Olive, Serviceberry, Sumac, Sycamore, Tupelo,
Walnut, Yew - Ectomycorrhizae
- Alder, Arborvitae, Aspen, Basswood, Beech, Birch,
Chestnut, Fir, Hemlock, Hickory, Larch, Linden,
Oak, Pecan, Pine, Spruce - Both
- Eucalyptus, Willow, Poplar
16Distribution of Mycorrhizal Fungi
- Naturally present in most native soils
- most plants and trees, have co-evolved with
mycorrhizal fungi - associations are the rule, not the exception
- Absent or poorly distributed in artificial or
disturbed soils - plants can fail if mycorrhizae do not establish
17Distribution of Mycorrizal Fungi contd
- All soils not the same
- inoculum potential varies
- may not be sufficient to allow successful plant
establishment - species distribution varies
- those present may be ineffective on non-native
species
18Mycorrhizal Inoculants
- Ecto fungi long used by forest industry
- pine seedling establishment
- Commercial Endo inoculants relatively new
- most plants are mycorrhizal
- non-coniferous plants primarily support Endo
- benefits extended to greater range of plants
- association essential for success
19 Inoculation strategies
- Transplants
- non-native introductions
- areas with significant soil disturbance
- scraped, top soil removed
- nutritionally poor, drought prone areas
- Plants growing poorly due to environmental
stresses - soil compaction
20Influence of fungicides on mycorrhizal fungi
- Normal usage rates and application methods
(spray) normally has no effect on mycorrhizal
fungi - metabolized by soil microbes
- Drenches/Soil Injection could have detrimental
effects - Systemics mostly transported upwards in plant and
not to roots. - General rule avoid use of fungicides 2 - 3 weeks
before and after inoculation - toxic Carbamates (Maneb, Zineb), PCNB,
Chlorothalonil (Daconil, Bravo), Triazoles
(Bayleton), Benomyl (Benlate) - non-toxic Signature, Captan, Carbendazim,
Metalaxyl (Ridomil, Subdue)
21Advantages of Rhizanova
- Emphasis on quality and quantity of inoculum
- Becker-Underwood an ISO 9001 registered company
- The only certified inoculum in the industry
- Species selected for effectiveness for the
broadest range of plants - No unnecessary amendments
- some amendments can be detrimental
- phosphorous fertilizers at high rates
