Georgia Performance Standards
  • Science
  • S3E1- Students will investigate the physical
    attributes of rocks and minerals.
  • Math
  • M3D1- Students will create and interpret simple
    tables and graphs.

4
Do you know the difference between a rock and a
mineral?
  • In this lesson, you will become a geologist. Your
job is to investigate the differences between a
rock and mineral. Have fun!! ?

5
Three Types of Rocks
6
Sedimentary Rocks
  • Broken rocks, shells, mineral grains, and other
    materials are all sediments.
  • All these sediments collect in layers to form
    sedimentary rocks.

7
Metamorphic Rocks
  • Made by extreme pressure and/or heat
  • Can you identify either rock? ?

8
Igneous Rocks
  • These rocks are formed from cooled magma.
  • Magma is melted rock deep inside the earth.
  • Magma on the crust of the earth is called molten
    lava.

9
Discover How Rocks are Formed
  • Click on the website below to learn more about
the three types of rocks and how they are formed.

10
The Rock Cycle
They are both pressed down.
All are made of minerals.
Both Experience heat and pressure.
11
EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT!!
  • Click on the website below to learn more about
    the rock cycle.

12
What are Minerals?
Look at all of my gold, Im rich!!
  • A mineral is a solid material made of one
substance, that occurs naturally on Earth.
  • Most of the common minerals are made of crystals.

13
Most Commonly Used Minerals
14
Our Favorite Gemstones
  • After surveying the class about our favorite
    gemstone, here are the results
  • Which gemstone does our class like the most? The
    least?

15
Lets Do Math!
  • Read the graph below. Create two questions about
the various items and there hardness according to
Mohs hardness scale. Exchange your questions
with a classmate and check their answers.

16
Lets Build a Volcano!!
  • First, view this erupting volcano video (click on
real media player and be patient).
  • http//www.nationalgeographic.com/eye/volcanoes/ph
    enomena.html
  • Now, lets have fun building your own volcano.

17
Test Your Knowledge!
  • Are you a Rock Hound? Take the quiz to find out.
    Good Luck!!

18
LETS SING!!!!
  • Rock Cycle Song
  • (Sing to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")
  • SEDIMENTARY rock Has been formed in layers
Often found near water sources With fossils
    from decays.
  • Then there's IGNEOUS rock Here since Earth was
born Molten Lava, cooled and hardened That's
    how it is formed.
  • These two types of rocks Can also be transformed
With pressure, heat and chemicals METAMORPHIC
    they'll become.

19
Your Job Assignment
  • National Geographic has hired you to investigate
the uses of minerals used in your daily life.
First, research the minerals you use. Then,
create a chart telling me the name of the
minerals and how it is used. Finally, survey your
classmates to see what minerals they use daily
and create a pie graph with your results.
  • Have fun! ?
