  • 1. Abigail Adams was involved early in the fight
    for womens suffrage before the Declaration was
    even written
  • It did not happen and women lost the right to
    vote in most states

2. Susan B. Anthony1820-1906
  • One of the earliest forceful leaders
  • Tried to get women included in the 14th 15th
    amendments
  • She helped form the National American Women
    Suffrage Association (NAWSA).
  • Practiced Civil Disobedience by voting was
    arrested
  • The courts upheld the different spheres theory

3. Carrie Chapman Catt1859-1947
  • Led NAWSA from 1900-04 after 1915
  • Focused on local fights, state by state
  • Many states began allowing women to vote in
    different elections

4. Alice Paul1885-1977
  • Led a NAWSA committee in her 20s until she and
    others left
  • More militant leader of National Womens Party
    (1917)
  • She focused on passage of a Constitutional
    Amendment
