3Outline of Voyages
Step 1 Neil Armstrong, Edwin Buzz Aldrin and
Michael Collins Strap into the 305 foot Saturn V
Rocket and enter the atmosphere. Step 2 The
rocket stages fell away and the rocket kicked
into velocity of at least 23,500 mph. the pilot,
Michael Collins separated the command module,
Columbia from the last rocket stage and docked
with the lunar module, Eagle. The space craft
continued on its way. Step 3 3 days after
departure from the earths surface, Columbia
starts orbit around the moon. On July 20th,
Armstrong and Aldrin were told to head down.
Eagle and Columbia separated, leaving Collins in
space and sending Armstrong and Aldrin on their
way.
Step 4 Everyone on earth was watching the event
on T.V. from the satellite cameras as Eagle
landed on the moon in a safe spot called the Sea
of Tranquility. Armstrong and Aldrin prepared to
go for the first moonwalk in history. At exactly
856 P.M. EDT Neil Armstrong stepped onto the
surface of the moon. All over the world people
heard, Thats one small step for man, one giant
leap for mankind. 15 min. later, Aldrin joined
Armstrong and the stayed for 2 hours to collect
soil and rock samples. Step 6 The mission ended
as the command module landed in the pacific ocean
and was taken on board by an aircraft carrier,
the USS Hornet.
Step 5 21 hours later, the pair returned to space
and joined up with Collins again. The Command
module then turned back and headed back to earth.
4Challenges Faced
- Some of the challenges the Apollo 11 faced were
that - Everyone knows that it must be difficult to
launch a space shuttle, because it took us so
long! - Landing on the moon could be difficult because
there are many boulders and craters on the moon. - It would probably be difficult to manoeuvre in
space because there are so many controls and it
gets confusing!
5Effects on History
Armstrong and Aldrins effect on history was very
major. Almost everyone in the world was watching
their televisions as Armstrong prepared to leave
the Eagle, and everyone was amazed to see the
very first moonwalk. In most elementary schools,
you can quickly mention space and everyone thinks
of Neil Armstrong! All over the world, people
know that Americans had men on the moon first,
not the Russians, and they did a lot for their
country.
