Patent mapping is a growing focus area
5
What is Patent Mapping?
  • Data Mining is the process of extracting hidden
    patterns from data.
  • Patent mapping is a data mining procedure that
    identifies
  • Number of Patents in a specific area
  • Number of Citations for specific Patents
  • Citation map showing the path of citations
  • Number of companies with patents in specific
    areas
  • Names of companies with the most patents in
    specific areas

6
U.S. Patents
  • A patent for an invention is the grant of a
property right to the inventor, issued by the
United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Generally, the term of a new patent is 20 years
from the date on which the application for the
patent was filed in the United States or, in
special cases, from the date an earlier related
application was filed, subject to the payment of
maintenance fees. U.S. patent grants are
effective only within the United States, U.S.
territories, and U.S. possessions. Under certain
    circumstances, patent term extensions or
    adjustments may be available.

7
Some Recent AMRDEC Patents
  • Robert Milton, Mark Kirkham, and Robert (Scott)
    Michaels - "Single-piece Stereolithographically-pr
oduced Missile", Patent 7,284,487, Issued 23 Oct
    2007.
  • Jeffery K. Levasseur and Brent A. Worley -
    "Apparatus and Method for Multi-channel
Equalization", Patent 7,330,507, Issued 12 Feb
    2008.
  • Jason C. Gilliam and Darin L. Kielsmeier -
    "Multi-purpose Single Initiated Tandem Warhead",
    Patent 7,363,862, Issued 29 Apr 2009.
  • Paul R. Ashley and William C. Pittman -"Image
    Analysis and Enhancement System", Patent
    7,381,937, Issued 3 June 2008.
  • David A. Bittle and Gary T. Jimmerson -"The
    Variable-Force Payload Ejecting System", Patent
    7,395,761, Issued 8 Jul 2008.

Why do it?
  • Saves Time Money
  • By Streamlining Patent Selection Process
  • Clear understanding of external environment
  • Saturated/Unsaturated Industry
  • Eliminates Redundant Research
  • More Focused Strategic Plan
  • Effective tool to remain aligned with strategic
    plan
  • Will help identify gaps in technology
  • Invest more in areas that are not currently being
    explored
  • Aid in identification of AMRDECs most successful
    technologies and inventors

Frankly, its beyond me why any company in this
day and age would even attempt to do RD without
the insights that patent mapping gives you. Its
like trying to navigate your companys future
blind, without a map. Paul Germeraad, Former VP
of Research, Avery Dennison, Rembrandts in the
