Title: Neo-Impressionism: Pointillism
1Neo-Impressionism Pointillism
2What is Neo-Impressionism?
- Neo-Impressionism is a smaller movement connected
to the much larger, avant-garde movement of
Post-Impressionism - It is based on the system of applying separate
colors to a surface so the eye will mix the
colors, not the artist and his paints
3So, how did it come about?
- French artist Georges Seurat studied the color
theory of the time and formulated a precise
application of painted dots that would mix
optically. Seurat called this Chromoluminarism - Because of Seurats scientific breakdown of
combining dots of color to create the illusion of
color he is often stated to be the father of
Divisionism, or Pointillism as we call it now

5Key characteristics of Neo-Impressionism
- Tiny dots of color
- Clean, clear contours around forms
- Luminescent (bright) surfaces
- Artificial lifelessness in figures/landscapes
6Key characteristics continued
- Paintings were created in a studio as opposed to
painted outdoors like the earlier Impressionists - Carefully and systematically ordered unlike the
sporadic, spontaneous strokes of Impressionists

- Paul Signac
- Charles Angrand
- Georges Lemmen
- Henri Edmond Cross
- Camille Pissarro
8Georges Seurat
- Born in Paris, France in 1859 Seurat developed
the Pointillism style, basing it off of the
Impressionistic ideas, but going about it in a
methodical way - He believed a painter could create harmony and
emotion in art similar to how a musician creates
harmony and emotion in music
9"Art is Harmony. Harmony is the analogy of the
contrary and of similar elements of tone, of
color and of line, considered according to their
dominance and under the influence of light, in
gay, calm or sad combinations. Georges Seurat

12Paul Signac
- Born in Paris, France in 1863 he helped Seurat
develop the Pointillist style and kept it going
after Seurats early death in 1891 - Felt Neo-Impressionism was a natural successor to
Impressionism, and brought Seurats color harmony
system to the attention of critics and writers
who could promote it
